Decay Beetles

Decay Beetles are large insects that feed on decomposing organic compounds, including food scraps, animal waste, plant materials, and dead bodies of any kind. The beetles have a shiny, shimmery exoskeleton that are collected and crushed into a powder for use in inks and makeup.

Basic Information

Ecology and Habitats

Decay Beetles live in places where a large amount of decomposing organic material can be found. They are often intentionally introduced to sewer systems, refuse piles, or anywhere waste is collected. Their feeding speeds up the decomposition process and also reduces foul odors in the area.

Biological Cycle

Eggs are laid in sheltered areas among the adults' natural habitat. After approximately ten days the eggs hatch into larvae that will immediately begin eating the organic material around them. If there is not enough organic material, they will turn to eating each other. After approximately two months they will enter a pupal state for nearly a year. Finally, they will emerge from their pupas as small adults, ready to continue consuming the organic material in their environment. For up to another four years they will eat and grow, often getting nearly as large as a typical house cat. Eventually, they will die and their exoskeletons will be collected to be used in makeup and colorful inks.

Behaviour

Decay Beetles are not known to be very social creatures. Though many may live in the same place, they don't seem to interact or communicate, except during mating. They are non-aggressive and will attempt to flee anything that tries to catch them. As adults they have few predators, but as larvae they are often eaten by birds and small animals.

Uses, Products & Exploitation

The shiny exoskeleton of the Decay Beetle has been used in makeup and inks for centuries. It is sometimes also used to make delicate beads. The artisans who produce these products will pay anyone to bring them the exoskeletons, often paying by the weight. This is a common way for poorer individuals, especially children who live on the streets, to earn some money and has become an industry in itself.

Geographic Origin and Distribution

Decay Beetles exist on a nearly global scale, though they are difficult to find or keep alive in places with low humidity.
