Languages
There are many languages spoken in Avaleen. There are the usual suspects for a D&D campaign setting: common, undercommon, celestial, dwarvish, gnomish, elvish, abyssal, etc. But there's also Akatian, Illevan, and Sangoran -- all of which have different accents and local quirks.
This document is here to give an overview of what's what in the world of linguistics. Now, bear in mind, even I (MJ) don't have all the answers so you are free to expand and adapt what you need for your own story!
Start here: Alaic - Proto-language is the first language of the mortals that came to Avaleen. This then splintered into Eastern and Western Alaic, and further into several branches that includes the modern languages as we know it today. Akati is mostly in its own linguistic branch, whereas Mountain Dwarfish and Thalmen Dwarfish actually developed in two different branches, meaning they are not mutually intelligble.
