The White Knights of the Frozen Wastes
The White Knights of the Frozen Wastes are similar in nature to the Apostles of the Radiant in that their goal is one of prevention. The White Knights of the Frozen Wastes is not as organized as the Apostles of the Radiant. They were born of the need to watch the Ice Road for travelers that was formed over 300 years ago.
The men and women who were White Knights were born into the position. They lived on the very northern fringes of civilization in Autauga and received no income for being members of a Knighthood. They made their living ice-fishing and one family ran a small tackle shop that also provided rooms for the rare traveler that came this far north. Rarely, a scientist would buy gear there, at the last trading post before the frozen wastes.
Thomas Ninetoes ran the shop and occasional inn for the rare scientist traveling north.
The White Knights were a small group, fairly diverse in their interests but all relied on ice fishing and each Knight, on a rotating basis, traveled south for supplies like flour and sugar and the necessities of living.
The White Knights wore no uniform, they never met to discuss their position as watchers because it wasn't necessary. The generation of White Knights that existed in the world today thought little of their title. It offered them no special reward. They lived their lives as they always had and each knew that if any traveler were to make its way across the ice road that occasionally formed a bridge between Autauga and the land to its East, they knew what to do.
All they had to do was spread the word. They used messenger birds, a type of pigeon or a mixed breed of two birds that made the far north home. Winter had come to the far north and for the first time in any of the White Knights' memories, the ice road had begun to form. The Knights discussed the phenomenon night after night in the tackle shop cum inn before finally deciding it was time to send some birds south. They would test the messaging system that had been in place for generations.
The formation of the ice road had been so unexpected that the White Knights could hardly believe it. They had no library to search through records of the last time this phenomenon had taken place. They just knew that it was important that they send messages south to several locations.
