The Drear
The Drear has many names, many horrors and many myths surrounding it. The only consistent thing about the islands is that all who go there, do not return. It is a haunting place of nightmares and lost souls, fated to endure untold torture for millennia. How long have these lands existed? How long have mortals feared the consequences of an unfavourable afterlife?
Sailors, explorers and the unfortunate all succumb to the green mist that covers the island. No one goes there of their own accord, but many are destined to wander its shores for eternity, not yet ready to accept the fate of death.
It is said that a Warden roams the island, imprisoning lost souls and ensuring the screams of the dead never truly die. Some say this Warden is the ruler and creator of the islands, some say he is just another prisoner of them. The captured souls that inhabit these islands are brittle husks of what they once were, forced to roam forever in search of meaning.
It is theorized that the islands are powered by the fear they invoke on the populace of Auros. Because of this, when the fear starts to wane, and the rumors turn from cautionary tales of the sea; to spooky campfire stories told to scare children. The Warden sends out a collection of souls to remind people of the horrors of its Islands. This soul has a body and mind of its own, but is haunted by the memories of the Warden and the Islands horrors.
These beings are referred to as the wanderless, as they have no place to go, and no where to return to.
Geography
The Drear is a collection of small islands with shallow rivers separating them. The rivers have a stillness to them that appears unnatural, where even walking through them creates silent ripples that dissipate far too soon. The islands have no hills or slopes, just an endless path of flat unfathomable terrain.
Climate
The Drear is engulfed in an ever present green mist. Reports say that your very bones feel the cold and damp, drenching and weighing down any mortals who stumble through it. There has never been a ray of sunshine to hit the ground of these islands, for many lost here, the memory of light and warmth has long been extinguished.
