Dragontortle

Dragontortle are mighty and enigmatic beings born from the union of ancient dragons and primordial tortles. These hulking, scaled creatures possess the durability of their tortle ancestors and the elemental power of dragons, making them natural protectors and guardians of the deep. With shells as impenetrable as steel, the ability to breathe both air and water, and either devastating jaw strength or a superheated breath attack, Dragontortleborn are imposing figures of both land and sea.

Their lives are guided by an innate balance between the wisdom of the tortle and the draconic urge for dominance or guardianship. Though often slow to act, their decisions are deliberate and impactful, shaped by centuries of reflection and deep connection to the world around them. As amphibious beings, they feel equally at home in coral palaces beneath the waves or atop volcanic cliffs overlooking the ocean's fury.

Features and Traits

As a dragontortle, you have the following traits:

Ability Score Increase
When determining your character's ability scores, increase one score by 2 and increase a different score by 1, or increase three different scores by 1. Follow this rule regardless of the method you use to determine the scores, such as rolling or point buy. The "Quick Build" section for your character's class offers suggestions on which scores to increase. You can follow those suggestions or ignore them, but you can't raise any of your scores above 20.

Age
Dragontortles mature by 50 years and can live up to 500 years, maintaining their vitality well into their final century.

Size
You are Large or Medium. You choose the size when you select this race.

Speed
Your walking speed is 30 feet.

Amphibious

You can breathe air and water.

Draconic Adaptation
Your draconic heritage grants you access to one of the following attacks (choose when you select this species):

Bite Attack. Your powerful jaws can be used as a natural weapon. When you attack with them it counts as a melee weapon attack with a reach of 10 feet. On a hit you deal 1d8 + your Strength modifier piercing damage, and the target must make a Strength saving throw (DC = 8 + your Strength modifier + your proficiency bonus) or become grappled. You can grapple only one creature at a time this way. The damage increases by 1d8 at 5th, 11th, and 17th level.

Steam Breath. When you take the Attack action on your turn, you can replace one of your attacks with a burst of superheated steam in a 15-foot cone. Each creature in the area must make a Dexterity saving throw (DC = 8 + your Constitution modifer + your proficiency bonus) or take 1d10 + your Constitution modifier fire damage. On a successful save, creatures take half as much damage. This damage increases by 1d10 at 5th, 11th, and 17th level.

You may use this feature a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus, regaining all expended uses on a long rest.

Natural Armor
Your shell provides you a base AC of 17 (your Dexterity modifier does not affect this number). You can't wear light, medium, or heavy armor, but if you are using a shield, you can apply the shield's bonus as normal.

Worker of the Deep
Your life in the deep has granted you some skills other might not have. You have proficiency in your choice of Athletics or Nature.

Languages
You can speak, read, and write Common and your choice of Aquan or Draconic.
