The Shatter

Around the planet of Aureole, there is a massive ring-like structure in orbit known as The Shatter. It is made up of trillions of pieces of crystal, known as Prismatic Shatterings , which reflect and refract the sunlight on the Sunside, and give pinpricks of prismatic light to the Deadside.

Ecosystem

It is thought that the Prismatic Light which bounces between Shatterings is able to sustain life in some form, however scholars have no definitive proof for this yet.

Ecosystem Cycles

The Shatter circulates around the planet in a cycle known as the Gap. This is because The Shatter is, well, shattered. Its pieces are not evenly distributed across the ring, with one side being extremely densely filled with the Prismatic Shatterings, and the opposite side being completely void of Shatterings. When the Gap passes over, one Ring Cycle is said to have passed. This is the basis for time keeping in Aureole. 1 Ring Cycle is roughly equal to 4 Earth Day-Night Cycles, and 1 Aureole year is exactly 100 Ring Cycles Long, so 400 Earth Day-Night Cycles.

Natural Resources

The Prismatic Shatterings range in size from dust paritulates to the size of mountains. Rarely, a shattering will enter the atmosphere and burn up, in a process known as Prismatic Escape. The Phenomenon can be observed rarely on the Deadside, as on the Sunside, the intense light makes it difficult to see.
