A festering wound of the Astral Sea the Abyss is the home of the Demon. The inky black rip in the cosmos holds infinite layers of writhing chaos, and the intent of destruction echoes across the universe.
If not for the constant waring within its destruction would spread and encompass all of creation. Short-lived alliances between demons bring about great death and ages of darkness.
During the Great Collapse 10,000 years ago the forces of demons united with their long-time enemies to take down a force that threatened to snuff out everything. Once complete the demons attempted to spread chaos across the universe, but, the Celestial placed a burning flame upon it, forcing the homeland of the Devil, the Nine Hells to be chained at its edges keeping the demonic forces trapped for them to devolve back into writhing chaos disunified. It is said that the great evil that threatened the universe was trapped at the very bottom of the Abyss forced down by the writhing masses of chaos, the Devil Lord Gonier.
This is how the Abyss has been for the last 10,000 years with the burning light of the Nine Hells holding the majority of the demon at bay only a few scurrying past it.
Few have dared travel into the Abyss as its chaotic magics drive all insane who sail too close to its inky halls.
Many practitioners of magic see the Abyss as a Cosmic Opposite of the Elemental Chaos as the positively aligned chaos of the elements are often used in magic by both Arcane and Druidic spell casters.
