S'soran

Lizardfolk are found all over the world and it is thought by some scholars that they may be the oldest culture in the world prior to the arrival of the K'Thonim. Sadly any proof of this was wiped out by the arrival of the K'thonum and the subsequent subjugation of all the people of the world of Atlantica. The S'Soran is a culture of Lizardfolk that inhabits the eastern portions of the Swamp Coast. They maintain cordial relations with the Taino, though they are generally wary of humans and other species. They are quite advanced and have a strong oral tradition, though they forego large-scale ironworking especially in the swampy areas they tend to dwell in. S'soran like most other ethnicities speak Common as a result of the rule of the K'thonum. However, due to lizardfolk physiology, they have an accent that does not allow them to make hard B or P sounds with their mouths, and their primary language has an emphasis on several forms of S and Ch sounds that are not often reproducible by non-native speakers.

Naming Traditions

Family names

Like many matriarchal societies, the S'soran trace thier lineage matrilinealy.  This means that children inherit the clan name of thier mother.

Culture

Shared customary codes and values

It is customary for the different sexes to not interfere or become involved with the politics of the other sex.  Being pulled into, or inserting oneself into the affairs of the other sex is considered rude.

Art & Architecture

One item of note is the S'Soran Hand Drum which is somewhat akin to a steel drum and is used to accompany a vocalist.

Ideals

Gender Ideals

Male S'soran like to adorn themselve in distinctive red paint reminescent of battles.  Every male job is either related to being a hunter or scouting as a warrior.  Even being a fishman is considered hunting (just for fish).  Males live on a seperate side of the community from females and only associate with them during the mating season or at the temples. Males do not concern themselves with the goings on of the females, other than if it impacts the community.  Since sires are kept private, younglings are raised in common with multiple "father figures" to choose from behaviorly.
Females are the keepers of the eggs, and in addition to having their own housing, they also maintain and gaurd the eggs.  Anyone non-female caught entering the egg creche has a good chance of being labeled an eggstealer (or eggsucker, which is extremely derogatory).  Since Females are physiologically larger than males, they are also warriors, and outside of the village mingle freely with the males.

Courtship Ideals

During mating season females select the sire for their clutch of eggs during displays of athletics, and cultural performance by the males.  Sires are kept private, and only revealed if the sire dies, for the purpose of veneration and prayer at the temple.  Mating is not the prolonged affair that other ancestories put into the effort.
