It was the end of an enlightenment era when those who knew magic were being hunted down and slaughtered just for their knowledge. The governments had become wary of the mage's powers and sought to suppress the knowledge for future generations—they did this via genocide. Knowledge was only able to survive thanks to those who were able to live away from society and keep the traditions going in secrecy.
