Saints of the Realm
Sainthood is a title and status achieved via feats that surpass mortal limits. These used to be decreed by the Gods but have since become voted by the popular religons with their departure. Popular feats that arose individuals to Sainthood in the history were examples where mortals ensured or surpassed danger and damage that should by all account have ended their life.
Sainthood gives no direct boons other than respect and acknowledgment. This does tend to any living saints to be treated with respect by common folks who recognise them, such as free meals, lodging and drinks along with patrons who may seek them out. A Saint's Bloodline may also benefit from the same perks, but few who achieve Sainthood settle to have children based on how dangerous the lives of Saints often are.
During the World Wars, a necrotic wave was unleashed upon a town as part of a magical weapon experiment. This human Cleric summoned a divine shield with such power and belief behind it, it became a living dragon of protection. The shield held and prevented destruction by the energy weapon, saving the entire town along with earning him sainthood. He would go on to serve as a divine protector and healer during the war to those who could not defend themselves from the sky cities.
Born with chaotic magic, this elven woman tamed not only the energy of the magic realm, but during the World Wars was known to be able to sooth and placate Sentient Weapons. She earned sainthood for converting several sentient weapons of great destructive power from paths of destruction to saviours of the poor and innocent. Sainthood did little to change her actions, living as she had always done, talking and converting more items where possible.
When a rift to the fire plane poured molten fire and rock down from the sky, this elven wizard managed to transfer the flow of the plane's energy itself into a nearby mountain to prevent the destruction of a local city. The mountain is now a volcano with how much raw energy was poured into it, redirecting the energy of the fire plane itself earned Edran Sainthood. He went on to use his fame as a saint to attract those who wished to learn to control the energy of rifts in a school for wizards.
When a rift to the realm of the dead unleashed hoards of undead into the country, many lives could have been lost if not for a lone ranger who happened upon the rift opening. She fought off hundreds of undead, the tale speaks when her arrows ran out, the blood from her weary fingers formed arrows themselves to slay her foes, earning her sainthood for the heroic act. Her injuries from the battle claimed her life shortly after others arrived on the scene. Rumours are her spirit still lingers in what is now the Pyrewood, warding the area from undead.
This privateer earned sainthood for his unique fleet and skill with blade and magic. Not only did this human man sail against sea beasts and rifts alike, he had a unique ability to tame dragons. His vessels were equipped with dragon riders and weapons that were imbued with draconic abilities. This unique ability earnt him sainthood, as he often came to aid those close rifts at sea using the dragons who fought alongside him.
This wandering Tortle was known for their abilities to be able to snatch the souls of the dying, and able to use them for good or ill. This power granted them the ability to stave off death, both their own and others, or inflict great harm upon those who they deemed deserve it. This unique ability earnt them sainthood alongside their long life of several hundred years. Many have sought the secrets of this longevity but few have come close to the skills East developed during their life.
This Orc man rose to Sainthood for being the only person to survive an encounter with the Child of Thran. The encounter withered his body and left him weak compared to the strong warrior he had once been, but for his sacrifice and survival, great knowledge was gained which earnt him his place. He lived the remainder of his life in peace and seclusion tending to a small farm until the weakness from the encounter claimed his life.
Alrifren is the known figurehead to the Cult of the Rotting Martyr, from where he sacrificed himself to close the Festering Tear, a dangerous rift into the Swamp of Decay. Blessed with a divine spark, his body is in a constant state of rotting and healing as he remains physically still to this day holding the Tear closed.
This human woman recently rose to sainthood when she suffered a mortal wound during a Rift Assault. Rather than perish, she forged the wound closed with molten metal to survive and slay a demon lord with a new powers the infusion yielded to her. She rose to sainthood from this act of defiant survival along with the discovery of mixing blood and metal to create a alloy like response. She spend the rest of her life forming The Order of Saint Lyra and developing further metallurgic discoveries such as Pureallium and early research into the Ironforged's creation. She was fatally wounded in a rift assult and was inteered in the Blackstone Keep.
