Moons of Athoria

Athoria has no permenant Moon or Moons. Instead, rather random appearances of moons appear in the night sky as if by random. Often nights will pass without any moons appearing in the sky, while other nights there can be multiple smaller moons or on larger moon that crosses the sky. This would be little more than a quirk of the night sky if not for the risk of "Moon Breaks", a Phenominon where a moon may appear that is infused with magic and causes an aura effect to wash across anywhere it can be seen on the planet.   During the early Eras of the world, it was recorded that even normal moons could have dire effects due to their effects on tides. Sailing and building ports was a struggle. When the Gods arrived, Mallina placed a ward upon the Oceans of the planets, to instead of being bound to lunar bodies, they would obey her will with more rythmic and predictable schedule.

Manifestation

When Moons appear in the sky over the planet, the most common effect is only to change the amount of light seen during the night. Some creatures are adapted to hunt under moonlight and take advantage to when a moon will appear, especially brighter or multiple moons. Beyond this, the appearance of a standard moon impacting visibility, there are some spells and magical effects which are heightened by the presence of a Moon in the sky, but these are rare and specialised practises.

Moonbreaks

The Scientific name for Moonbreaks are Lunar Corruption, but to most people, the term Moonbreak covers when a moon appears in the nightsky that is tainted by dark energy. This energy washes down onto Athoria, causing strange region wide effects which can range from causing beasts and monsters to fly into a rage, to spontanious combustion of dry materials. Due to the danger that Moonbreaks can cause, diviners are often keeping track of what they can gleam of the future to forwarn of upcoming Moonbreaks.   Some historical effects of moonbreaks have included the following effects:
  • Tarlight - Darkness took on a physical sticky like effect along with making curses and spells harder to remove. The tar like effect of the darkness clung to creatures making them flamable but volatile
  • Frozen Moon - A blizzard washed across the land under the light of the moon
  • Moon of Judgement - A Giant eye upon a cursed moon seems to draw those to death. People with wounds they normally could have survived persished and the gaze seems to drain energy, making creatures move slower and more sluggishly
  • Bloody Eclipse - A rare Moonbreak where a tainted moon covered the sun. It drove beasts and people alike to a hunger for blood and spreading an almost infectious madness
  • Blazing Moon - This Firey moon granted monsters across the world flaming natural weapons to prey upon the unsuspecting. Columns of fire erupted from the earth where the moonlight fell.
  • Void Moon - A seemingly empty moon which was recorded as a hole in the sky, this event seemed to suck all the light from the world, plunging it into darkness few lights could pierce, including natural darkvisionl
Athoria has Many Moons. Athoria has no Moons. Both of these facts are true.   Maxrin Verintus, Scholar of the Mortal Era
