Languages of Athoria

In Athoria languages are known commonly for the race who initially developed them before the common tongue was an agreed standard language. Each are still used in specific cases where applicable for each language. In addition, several of the languages from other realms have been adapted and sometimes used on the Material Plane

Common Languages

Elvish: ancient language kept alive for traditions sake more than practical use. Often used in arts or song along with ancient text. Similar to real world Latin in terms of use.   Dwarvish: A very mathematical language which is used often in logical or business deals as has an advanced numbering and weight system not present in other languages.   Halfling: A short hand spoken dialect that is not too dissimilar to common. But knowing all the double or triple meanings is where the language depth lies. Similar to real world rhyming slang   Goblin: an even shorter short hand with words of usually only a couple syllables. The trick with goblin is knowing what emphasis to put on each sound.   Orcish: A gutteral language often used in chants and rituals still. A language supposed to be in tune with the earth. Shamans can apparently sing in the language to feel the ground beneath them resonate in tune for approval or denial.   Gnomish: A very technical language with about a dozen words for the term "inch" depending on it's relative use. Often used in complex schematics or planning, such as engineering or architecture plans

Rare / Other Plane Languages

Giant: A runic language more often written than spoken. Short key phrases make up words and sentences. Each word holds power which can be formed into runic magic. Similar to Skyrim dragon shouts   Infernal and Abyssal: languages used in the Hellish planes, infernal is considered a higher class of language that only those in positions of power are allowed to learn.   Celestial and Sylvan: languages from the divine and Fae realms respectively. Not commonly used in material plane Draconic: Actually Lizard folk race, but called draconic after they according to legend learnt it from a dragon. Uses a writing form of quick slashes which can be easily carved into trees or ground for tribal hunting customs   Primordial: The languages of the elements, split into four dialects for each element. Few can speak this language as it is commonly spoken in tones that sound like falling rocks, burning embers or breezy winds.   Lyran: A new language being developed by the Order of Saint Lyra which used mechanical enhancements to speak words that a mortal mouth cannot. Ironforged can speak this language but other creatures require implants in their vocal cords to make the sounds required to speak the language.   Aquan: The language spoken by Merfolk and those who reside beneath the waves. It has tones of low bass to be able to travel underwater along with clicks and whistles akin to dolphin noises.
