Changes to Magic Items

The main method of aquiring magical items in Athoria is by crafting them from magical reagents. Most crafting rules of magical items is using the rule set found in Helliana's Guide to Monster Hunting. However, this also includes changes to magical items being dropped from creatures and found in treasure hoards.

Cursed Items

When a creature dies wielding a magic item, part of that creature's essence or soul lingers in the magic item, effectivly cursing it. When this happens, the item gains 3 flaws from the enchantment flaw table. One of these will always be the "Cursed" affix, while the other two are determined randomly or can be chosen if they fit the slain owner thematically.   When an item is cursed in this way, the curse can be removed by reforging the item by expending the required essence for its rarity, performing a crafting check to remove the existing flaws. Alternativly, the item can be broken down for essence. Doing so requires an check based on the item to reverse engineer it, using the same skill that would be use to craft it (eg, a Flamtongue sword would use a Intelegence (Survival) check.)   The DC follows the following based on rarity of the item to gain the required essence. Failing the DC by a certain number will still provide an essence of a lower quality. You always get at least a Frail Essence when disenchanting this way.

Broken Items

Several Magic items have ways to break them as part of using their final charge or risking by use. Rather than being destoryed by this process, the magic will rupture and break the item while maintaining its form and creation. The item can then be repaired by using an Essence of equal rarity to the item to reinvigorate the item which can be done over a long rest. Otherwise, the item can still be reforged using the normal rules as if it had not been broken using the broken item as the material components and a new essence to reforge it.
