The Great Dawn War
Before the Great Wheel took shape and the prime material was born, there was only etheral consciousness. Good and evil did not exist as we know it; there was only light and dark that siwrled in an endless dance as two great primodial titans, Lumina the "Lady of Light" and Umbra the "Lord of Darkness", came to embody these forces. These early consciousnesses were the Great Titans who balanced each other and felt complete together, but soon, that feeling faded, and they began to drift apart. Lumina and Umbra argued over which force was first and who could exists without the other. Lumina claimed that darkness would not exists without light, but Umbra retorted that before light, there was only darkness. These arguments became heated, lasting for aeons at a time, and their words shook the fabric of reality itself and became a new of consciousness in and of themselves, the primordials. These new titanic children emobied the chaotic energies of these clashes and became the elemental primordials who each carved out a section of realtiy which collectgively became known as the elemental chaos. The plane of fire was the domain of Ignis who embodied the rage, love, and passion of his parents whereas his sister Mistral took the more subtle and flowing enegergies and took up residence in the plane of air. Mistral did not lack passion, but she directed her force more cunningly and strategically much like her brother Oceanos. He embodied the the Great Primordials' ability to redirect and and refocus their energies and their malleabilioty of form and thus took up residence on the new plane of water. Lastly, Terranus, the titan of the Earth plane embodied their steadfastness, stubborness, and foundation energies. The Age of the Titans had begun. Each titan was able to creat whole new forms of life on their respective planes, and where the planes overlapped, ever more chaotic forms were able to emerge from the clash.
For a time, Lumina, and Umbra, and their wayward children were able to strike a balance but over time the former decided that they had to restrain the almost limitless potential of the latter. Thus, new boundaries were created around the elemental planes to shield the outer realm from interference. Since the elemental planes were vast and interconnected, the parents did not think that their children would care; they had everything they could. However, the primordials chaotic nature embraced change and malleability (to varying degrees), and they immediately fought against the confinement. The primodrials and their servants waged war against the teo Great Titans and each blow struck sent ripples throughout the planes. Lumina caused elements of light to flare on the plane of fire while Umbra snuffed out all light from the deep caverns on the plane of earth. In response, hurricane winds that would topple mountains and great waves that would swallow whole cities crashed against the outer barriers while great earthquakes and torrents of fire raged against the Great Titans. The Great Dawn War had begun, and as the battles raged across the known universe, the wounds ran deep. Umbra was piered by the armies of earth elementals and his blood ran into the earth thus creating cursed shades, darkness elementals, semi-sentient jellies and slimes. Lumina's great spear of light struck at the nexus of the elemental chaos creating a strange confluence of swirling, mixing energies. New beings comprised of positive energy, light, and fire were born and while some joined their mother in the light, many chose to descend into the dark.
Lumina and Umbra's already strained relationship was stretched to the limit during this conflict by figurtive struggle and emotional turmoil as well as by what we would interpret as literal distance. Spheres of light and darkness separated into discreet realms, and soon the Old Titans were becoming weary. They needed help to restrain the primordials, so, they furst enlisted the new beings born from the strife and created a new fighting force which staved off catastrophe; however, this would only be a stopgap measure. Therefore, the Great Titans chose a new tactic; they talked to the primordials and diverted their attention inward to what was happening at the confluence of the elemental chaos. Where the four elements were mixing, new spheres of life were coming into existence. The primordials were fascinated with this new proto form of life and proceeded to pour energy into it. New beings were born, planets took shape and the first gasp of our reality took shape. The beings of the upper and lower planes, who became the first incarnation of the gods, also saw what was happening and wanted to have their own influence on this new plane of existence.
All of the titans, primordials, and the gods agreed to a truce and proceeded to pour their time, energy, and desires into this new "Prime Material Plane". All of the four basic elements were incorporated as well as the new gods domains of fate. The gods were delegated responsibiities by the Great Titans who divested power and authority to their newest children. Their purvues and powers would shift over time, as a while they represented a change from unrestrained chaos to order and law. Even the most chaotic of gods must embrace some form of permanence and order, and both the gods and primordials had to conduct their work under the covers of Light and Dark. Thus, the Great Dawn War was ended, but the stage was already set for a second conflcit to come.
Historical Basis
No one can say for certain whether or not this clash of the titans truly happened as the above account is merely one of many, but most faiths agree that the Dawn War did occur and that it led to the creation of life as we know it. Much of the blood shed during that initial conflict agve rise to the weave of magic throughout the mutliverse in addition to the magical energy that pulses within countless worlds throughout the cosmos. It is believed that scars of the Dawn War are still seen and felt across the planet of Astur and perhaps beyond.
