Cydonia has not had declared king since Praetorius' rebellion, but there still needed to be someone chosen to make the hard decisions even when the provincial leaders were in deadlock. Though this wasn't meant to be dynastic position, the so-called Lord Paramount title has rested with the Marellan family since the first Praetorian War. Thus Gaius Croesus Marellus, the de facto head of state and Lord Paramount for all six provinces, is but the latest in a recent line of rulers.
His rule has been fairly benign, and he has allowed a great amount of autonomy to the provincial knights, but Croesus has been shrewd enough to ensure that loyalty to the state as a whole is "paramount". Also, conflicts with Galatia, Vecland, and Praetorius have been frequent enough that the Lord Paramount has had to call up the local levies to ensure Cydonia's safety. In addition, his rule has been strengthened by the fact that he is a capable general, a charismatic leader, and a skilled practitioner of the arcane. Thus, his enemies have come to fear and respect him, the Cydonian people love him, and the knights obey him. If any Cydonian noble was to aim for the title of king and reasonably be able to keep it, it would be Gaius Croesus Marellus.
Personality Characteristics
Motivation
This man is driven by a need to protect his house and province. As one of the high lord of the central province, he wants to ensure its success. In addition, he wants to add an additional province to prevent further deadlocks in the council vote; to that end, he wants to add the subterranean dwarves kingdom of Ironforge as a Cydonian province. Sadly, he knows that this goal is controversial, and thus, he has to be crafty about how he goes about accomplishing it.
Savvies & Ineptitudes
He is an expert linguist and understands most of the primary languages spoken in the shattered lands as well as a few exotic ones. He is also quite skilled at abjuration and enchantment magics.
He would boast that he is highly skilled in all areas, but he is painfully lacking in guile. He can be persuasive, but if trickery and subterfuge are needed, he relies on seneschals and go-betweens.
