The Ithilogian Plague

One of the worst calamities of Extiri was the Ithilogian Plague. Two hundred years ago, the pandemic caused one of its greatest calamities. It was the last great pandemic, and every now and again, the Ithilogian Plague reappears in some of the smaller villages in Norovia. However, since it exploded, despite the fact that there are cases every year, it hasn't spread across the continent as much as it did during the height of the pandemic. However, to say that the Ithilogian Plague was the first time that this particular disease to cause a pandemic would be faulty.   The Ithilogian Plague has a long history of terrorising Extiri. At its peak, it killed half of those it infected, with its long incubation period and it's ability to remain contagious while asymptomatic is what made it so devastating. To this day, abandoned towns and villages scatter across Norovia, Eldonia, Kalveg, and everywhere else. The plague cycled through the continent for five years, and by the time it had passed, sixty million people died, but there are suggestions that it killed more people than that, as there are many unknowns still.

Transmission & Vectors

The vectors for the disease were two rats which came over from Intiri. While they died before other rats could get the disease, the bugs that spread the disease found a new home among other small rodents. Alongside that, the disease can be transmitted through all types of fluids.

Causes

A bacteria known as Isilis Visina is responsible for the disease. And although the Ithilogian Plague began recently, the disease crossed over from Intiri back in the first century. It transferred over to a specific type of bug in Extiri. However, Isilis Visina tends to go dormant for hundreds of years, not spreading between people and animals.

Symptoms

The symptoms of the Ithilogian plague manifest as diarrhea, vomiting, a rash, and sometimes pneumonia.

Treatment

There is no treatment for the Ithilogian Plague to cure it. Rather, the most important thing is to make sure the person suffering from the disease can have plenty of clean sources of water to drink. Dehydration and blood loss is one of the most common ways to die from the plague.

Prognosis

The prognosis is that if you have the Ithilogian Plague, the chances of death are high, and the general consensus is that it's probably best to rest as much as you can, get as many fluids as you can, and try to pass as peacefully as you can. However, with the way the plague spreads, after you show the first fever, the plague will last 3-7 days before killing someone. After the fever, however, some immunocompromised people will only last 24 hours.

Sequela

Isolation, fear, and hate arose because of the plague. The shapeshifting populations had a less likely chance of getting the disease and dying, and although many of them became healers to help aid the populations, conspiracies spread and began to give others the idea that the shapeshifters somehow caused the plague. Because even with their help, while the shapeshifting healers mitigated the losses, there was a belief that they killed people, rather than helping them.

Prevention

Quarantining, being careful to close wounds, and having good sanitary practices can prevent the spread of the disease.
