Al-Lisan

Al-Lisan is the native tongue of Submana, spoken almost exclusively within the limits of the city walls and outposts along the desert trade road.

Description

Al-Lisan closesly mirrors that of Jannti, though the obscurity of its parent language means few people are aware of the resemblance, and even fewer know the relationship between the two languages. The heavily localized nature of the language means it is rarely heard outside the borders of Submana which, paired with the lack of shared ancestry with most other human tongues, gives most the impression of it as an exotic and particularly foreign language.

Speakers

Al-Lisan is spoken almost exclusively by natives of Submana and those whose business regularly takes them through it.

Dialects

The heavy localization of Al-Lisan means that dialects are often too similar to properly differentiate. There is an observable difference between the speech patterns of those living in upper Submana relative to lower Submana, but the variance is minor enough that only those well steeped in the language can differentiate it, and it lacks the barrier to communication of a proper dialectical distinction.
