Kitsune
Kitsune are a race of anthropomorphic foxes, their coats and furs differing vastly from places to place, they are usually orange, black, silver, or grey. They have lived in Rokugan alongside humans for centuries. It was not always this way, however, Kitsune used to keep to the southern forests and seek out lives of solitude amongst their kinsman. To keep the humans away from their homes and sacred forests they’d often play tricks on them, luring them away from their forests or leading them to an untimely demise.
The Kitsune have never harbored ill will or ill intent towards others however, they simply preferred to keep to themselves. At one point a long time ago the humans revered the Kitsune as powerful Kami, a situation the Kitsune were all too proud to take advantage of. This lead to the race integrating themselves into Human society secretly. To this day humans still occasionally worship mightier Kitsune, though have mostly come to terms with the fact that they’re just another mortal race capable of playing cunning tricks on them.
The Kitsune are masters of illusion, the magical talent required to use illusions almost coming to the kitsune naturally. For many centuries the Kitsune have used these skills to trick and deceive others to gain the upper hand in situations, or simply for fun. The primary use of these skills however, is how many Kitsune assume a human form for much of their time among humans. This way they can better blend in and hide themselves from would be assailants, or those they do not wish to mingle with. Kitsune are very playful by nature and take great pleasure in playing tricks or deceiving others. This is usually harmless however, as Kitsune are not evil by nature, simply playful and fun loving.
Integrating with Rokugan as a whole, however, has changed many Kitsune. While many would still enjoy their tricks and illusions, many more have taken up lives of discipline and enlightenment alongside the other races. As such, Kitsune are among one of the most diverse races in Rokugan, spread throughout the many provinces. Though they have made a city that consists mostly of Kitsune on the island of Kyushu, home to the Sugikawa Clan. Because of this, the two peoples have become great friends and partners, often trading and mingling with one another. In fact, many of the elite Samurai Retainers of the Sugikawa Daimyo happen to be Kitsune.
Basic Information
Anatomy
Kitsune are anthropomorphic fox people. They stand shorter than the average human, and can have anywhere from one, to nine tails each with their own magical properties. Most the time, however, Kitsune use their natural gift with illusions to appear human to others. The one trait they have a hard time hiding however, are their unnaturally golden eyes.
Ecology and Habitats
Most Kitsune stick to the warm forests of southern Rokugan, in small tribes if not Kitaku city itself. Their fur builds itself up in the winter months, and sheds rapidly in the summer to keep them warmer and cooler respectively. They were once a race of scavengers that eventually discovered how to bend the world around them, evolving into intelligent hunter gatherers, and then to a civilized species.
