Hammerdons Mettle
In the southeastern corner of the country, a giant mining city has been built into the foot of the mountain range. Although the city outside of the tunnels is quite vast, it is incomparable to the massive tunnels that stretch into The Red Spikes. For over a millennium the dwarven clans of the mountain have excavated it for its precious metals and rare earths.
Demographics
The vast majority of the population are dwarves, becoming more and more prominent the further one travels into the tunnels.
In the outside city there is a prominent amount of humans, yet their need for a light source keeps most of them away from the inside of the mountain.
Plenty of Half-Orcs can be found throughout the settlement. Because they are strong workers, suited to a life in the dark reaches of the caverns, they have found a natural place in the city. They are, however, still the target of much prejudice.
Deep within the mountain lies a compound of Gnomes who say that they have lived in the depths far longer than any dwarf.
Most other races are very rare, while most elves are outright shunned.
Government
The city is ruled by its confederacy of guilds. To work within the Hammerdon one is required to sign up with one of the guilds and pay taxes to them. Each guild is responsible for the actions, and well being, of their own members. When discussing undertakings that would affect the entire city a guildmeet is called. The guilds send a retinue of their staff to put forth their say in the matter and the meet goes on until a majority consensus has been reached. These discussions usually go on for several weeks.
Yet it wasn't always like this. For stories are still told about the time before Hammerdon joined in the Republic of Thorns. Stories of when the guilds were not in charge. Stories of the Mountain Queen.
