Fjelldar Dwarves

"We may be short, aye, but from our mountain tops, we still get tae look down on ye."
— Durgan Logbakh

Since their creation and awakening, tall mountain peaks have been natural home to the dwarves. In the age of their inception they have been immediately assailed from all sides, and their affinity for the already very defensible tall places of the world allowed the fledgling race to survive. Over time, they have only grown more adept at living in their mountain homes and cavernous systems that exist within them. Their culture and way of life have revolved around their strongholds and many of their characteristics had followed suit. With the centuries, the dwarves have spread further into the world, and as such have split into few different branches. But those that have remained true to their origin, who are still considered the quintessential dwarves, those are known as the Fjelldar - "Mountain folk" or "Mountain-dwellers" in dwarvish tongue.

Short and of stout stature, Fjelldar cherish beauty and skill, but value simplicity and practicality. Their communities are often isolationist in nature, boasting comparatively fewer members of other races among their residents. Their hard lives have made them wary of strangers - one too many raid by mining kobolds or roving goblins would make anyone live on edge and fully alert. Still, their contributions to the world are second to none, and as such many value and seek their skill and expertise, laced with curmudgeony as they tend to be.

Basic Information

Anatomy

With their propensity for mountaineering and tunneling, combined with frequent work at the forges, in mines, or simply their more combative lifestyle, the Fjelldar often develop comparatively thicker musculature than other dwarves. Rugged life has made them into a race that views hardship as the norm to be bent around, not under.

Ecology and Habitats

From mountain bases to mountain peaks, the Fjelldar carve their mighty cities into the bones of the world. Different groups of Fjelldar live in different types of mountain climates, from dry, tawny, wind-beaten desert mountains to the white-and-grey, ice-slick mountains of the north. Those strongholds often have remote outposts nearby that serve various purposes - farming, logging, commerce, etc. At the hearts of their mountain homes, many Fjelldar have over many generations built tunnel networks connecting the nearby strongholds. Many have fallen to disuse and disrepair, but the most vital ones are still being maintained and used.

Additional Information

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

With their cities partially or wholly built into the mountainsides, the Fjelldar are often well used to conditions of sparse light or darkness.
