What is Enrai

Enrai is the mystical energy which enables magic, and created Kami and Yokai in ancient times. Enrai can only be seen by mages, yokai, and kami, but appears as a chaotic stream of mist which reacts to the world around it, moving and surrounding the natural world and living creatures. Despite this Enrai is rare in this form within Ashihara, but is abundant in the realms of Yomi and Takama

What is Enrai Corruption

Enrai Corruption is when the normally harmonious Enrai is made unstable by a variety of reasons. Enrai Corruption is generally bad for mortals and mages, while having a neutral effect on the local environment.

Causes of Enrai Corruption

Enrai Corruption is caused by any use of magic, by humans, Yokai, or Kami to some degree. While not normally a problem, the long term expansion of magic has created a deal by itself. The typical source is from Negative emotions, any form of death, and pollution, causing the local Enrai from Yomi and Takama to become twisted and unstable.

Purification of Enrai corruption

In order to take care of Enrai Corruption, a mage is needed which is proficient in purification magic. The purification mage cleanses the individual or area of the negative effects, while making the region resistant to further issues.

Effect of Enrai Corruption

Mage Enrai Corruption

Enrai Corruption causes a mage’s magic to become unstable and unpredictable, making what should be an easy spell into a difficult one. The worst cases, may cause a mage themselves to mutate into a form of Yokai.

Non Mage Enrai Corruption

For non mages, Enrai Corruption is usually deadly if exposed to heavily, with slower exposure usually making an individual sickly and unwell.

Rural Area Enrai Corruption

When a local area is contaminated by Enrai Corruption, the presence will rapidly increase the amount of wildlife and vegetation, usually making the region impossible to cultivate for mortal use. Although it won’t change the climate or terrain, making Enrai Corrupted Jungles and Deserts just as likely. Flora and Fauna over generations will adapt, and use the presence of Enrai as a simple form of energy. At the basic level this increases the amount of dangerous animals in a given area, making it already a no go zone for non mages.

The most dangerous aspect is the creation and attraction of Yokai. Initially some Flora and Fauna will develop limited abilities in magic, transforming them into Yokai. They generally behave similar, but may begin to wander and become more aggressive targeting cattle or lone travelers.

Given Longer Monster type Yokai will mutate from either existing Yokai, or are entirely new. They are generally unnatural and horrific in appearance, and have a variety of magical abilities. What makes them especially dangerous is Monster Yokai prefer to actively hunt humans and humanoid Yokai, but are generally cowardly, knowing how to avoid hunters.

The Worst Effect is the eventual attraction of Spirit Yokai, they are not created by Enrai Corruption but are lured to it from Yomi. Spirit Yokai use the Enrai Corruption to make their magical abilities stronger, while treating mortals as a nuisance or malicious form of entertainment.

Urban Area Enrai Corruption

Generally Enrai corruption works similar to more nature based environments, but usually appears underneath the Onmyoji’s watchful eyes. Cities are officially well guarded from the outside, with mages preventing the spread of outside corruption and yokai. Within the walls the poor conditions can cause Enrai Corruption in the sewers and slums. Similar effects are seen, with local urban based flora and fauna being affected, but usually quickly learning how to stay unnoticed by only showing themselves at night.

Monster Yokai are rare but a major problem, being born of the filth of the city, they prey on the poverty stricken neighborhoods, who use the sewers to ambush other parts of the city.

Unofficially Undead Yokai are rampant in most Cities usually contaminated to the Sewers, but are usually too weak to leave them. Undead usually emerge from an unchecked Enrai Corruptoin problem which feeds on itself, causing those who die from it, to turn into Undead Yokai.

Ghost Yokai are another problem which only ever increases, as more people die creating more ghosts to be banished. Enrai Corruption typically only makes this worse by making the normally semi mentally stable ghosts prone to psychotic rampages. Basic use of magic creates a slight amount of Enrai Corruption, while the main sources are negative emotions, death, and pollution.
