"You asked for the judgement of a Knight upon this matter, my Lord. You have received it. Now pay the man the damages you owe and apologize, or if you wish I can drag you to the nearest Justicier and we will put the matter before him. I can all but guarantee you that it will cost you even more."
Existing between the Nobles and the Commoners, on nearly every metric, are the Knights of Merjoux. Knights come from both Noble and Common origins and occupy a strange, sometimes shifting, middle ground between the two facets of society. While Nobles are the rulers of Merjoux and Commoners are the force which makes the Kingdom as a whole continue to function, the Knights exist as a sort of grease in the wheels of this great machine. The cities and towns of Merjoux often have men and women employed to keep the peace and deal with crimes, but in many of the smaller towns and villages these men and women often prove either not enough to handle it or simply can’t be afforded. This does not even count the large areas of wilderness which simply aren’t policed at all.
This is where the Knights come in; men and women dedicated to serving the Kingdom and protecting it. Knights often travel either alone or in small groups across the land, lending a hand and dealing with problems that the people have. These problems could be other people or wild beasts or other more dangerous creatures from the Feywild. This is not their only purpose, however, for Knights are highly trained warriors and typically either belong to or have pledged fealty towards a specific House. This does not mean that any particular House should hold the absolute loyalty of a Knight. According to old traditions, and the ceremony of being knighted, each and every Knight swears an oath before either a senior Knight of their Order, or before the King himself. This Oath is known as The Knight’s Code and is their path of morality, their ethical guidance throughout their life. The Knight’s Code is what each and every Knight within Merjoux holds their actions up to for judgement. That, at least, is the intent behind the Code and the training that all Knights receive. The truth of the matter is a lot less black and white.
The Code by which all Knights live their lives and swear their very souls to exists because of a war between the High Houses and the Low Houses. Exact dates are uncertain but around one thousand years prior during the reign of King Pierrot de Diamant le Sangun, unrest rose among many of the Noble Houses. The Houses known now as The Low Houses, gathered their forces together, the people led by Knights and they marched against the King. The King gathered the High Houses to him and fielded his own army. In the end the Low houses were defeated and in the aftermath two things came to pass. The first was the creation of The Order of the Golden Rose to oversee all the various Knightly Orders. The second was the creation of The Knight’s Code, to guide their honor and loyalty.
The Knight’s Code
The Knight’s Code is a code of ethics and morality which the Knights of Merjoux swear to uphold no matter the situation. It is made up of nine tenets which all Knights are expected to uphold upon pain of death. They are as follows:
Serve thy Kingdom and Guard it from all Enemies
The first tenet and the one with the broadest reach charges the Knights with serving and protecting the sanctity of the Kingdom of Merjoux. Many people believe this simply means they are the servants of the King, because the King is Merjoux. But there are legislators who say the Knight’s Code actually contains no language directly forcing fealty to any one ruler, only to the Kingdom itself.
Protect the Weak and Defenceless
The second tenet, as with many of those that will follow, is straightforward and simple to interpret. This tenet charges the Knights with the protection of those who are unable and incapable of defending themselves. The young and the old, the sick and the crippled, all fall under this aegis, but often so too do the poor.
Help those with Need
The third tenet charges the Knights with helping those in need, and while it sounds simple, there is often complexity within this tenet. The definition of need, for example, is important for many use the word ‘need’ when they should be using the word ‘want’ to describe what they are asking for. Need, as defined by the tenet, means to be without something which could otherwise improve the quality of life. Food, water, clothing, shelter, protection from harm or abuse. However each Knight must weighs the needs of the many and help those he or she deems most needful.
Comport thyself with Honor and Grace
The fourth tenet charges the Knights to maintain a behavior suitable for their station. This mostly applies to upholding of the Knight’s Code, which where the concept of Honor is from. Grace, on the other hand, applies to how a Knight acts in public to both Commoners and Nobles. To the Commoners a Knight must commanding, but not high-handed, a paragon of virtue and something to aspire towards. To the Nobles a Knight must be deferent, but not subservient, a reminder that they serve the kingdom and not any one person.
Do not Debase thy Title
The fifth tenet charges the Knights to uphold the dignity of their granted title and position. This is done by acting with honor and grace, and not becoming a mockery of the station. This is also done by not ‘selling one’s sword’ and effectively charging people, either Commoners or Nobles, for that which a Knight should do as part of their duty. There is also a note among the original text of the Code which speaks to the moral failings of one who sires many children from many women.
Guard the Honor and Grace of thy fellow Knights
The sixth tenet charges the Knights with the protection of their fellow Knights with regards to their behavior, morality and ethics. A Knight who is failing in upholding the Code will be noticed by other Knights and be spoken to. If necessary they will intervene with whatever measures are necessary to help the failing Knight. The original Code also speaks of taking drastic measures and dispensing justice upon a fellow Knight, should it be needed. It is better to take a Knight to his final rest than to allow them to sully the good name of Knights everywhere.
Be Fair, Just & True
The seventh tenet charges the Knights with upholding the values of Equality, Justice, and Truth. As they often act in place of Justiciers when away from the cities, Knights must be able to be fair and objective when asked to rule upon a dispute. They must seek out the truth of the matter and render a just sentence upon those involved.
Break not thy Solemn Word
The eighth tenet charges the Knights with being true to their given word. When a Knight says she will do something, then it may be counted upon to be upheld. A Knight will not often promise the impossible, or indeed promise anything beyond trying or doing their best. This may seem like equivocating, but as most Knights are honorable it is not that so much as not wishing to be held accountable for an end result they could not have prevented. Several stories exist of Knights with much bravado claiming an easy victory and losing and being stripped of title by the King for not keeping their word.
Turn not a Blind Eye to Evil
The ninth and final tenet of the Code charges the Knights with fighting against evil whenever it is found. It does not hold all Knights accountable for unknown evil, for all can be deceived or fail to notice something, but it does decry any Knight who knowingly allows evil to go uncontested. In the original text of the Code it speaks of evil in terms of corruption, hatred and various sins. The language likens these in terms of creeping weeds which choke out the live of flowers along with allusions to the Fey themselves as the source of evil.
The Organization of the Orders
The Knights of Merjoux are organized into various Orders of Knights, each of these Orders different from the others. These differences could be in training methods, weapon specializations, battlefield tactics, skill levels, social status or even their ideologies. Despite these differences there are some things which remain the same among the Orders. All Knights receive training with the sword and lance, as well as how to ride a horse both in and out of battle. All Knights know enough of etiquette to not embarrass themselves in from of nobility or royalty. Most importantly all Knights begin the same way, first as a Page and then as a Squire to an already established Knight. This time spent learning beneath a Knight is to teach the, usually young, boy or girl what they need to know both physically and mentally to prepare for the trials ahead of them.
After three years as a Page and three more as a Squire spent with their Master Knight, then their resolve is tested usually by Knights of the Order that their master belongs to. Should they pass the tests they become a Novice for two years as they continue to learn from many of the teachers their Order has to offer. Their education here is about the laws, the Knight’s Code, etiquette and so on. There is another test, this time of their knowledge, before they are made a Man/Woman at Arms. They leave then with their Master for two more years, acting as both shield bearer and companion in arms with their Master. They are expected to act as a Knight would and to uphold the Code even though they have not yet sworn. These final two years are the final testing of the young man or woman and if at the end of it they are found worthy, their Master will speak on their behalf before the Order. The Man/Woman at Arms will swear to uphold the Knight’s Code before the head of the Order, who is acting in the King’s stead and they will become a Knight.
This process is how all men and women are raised to Knighthood, with one small exception. Either through great service to the Kingdom, or a feat of such heroic renown that none can deny it, a man or woman might receive a gift from the King himself and be Knighted for his or her actions. Such people are known as The Rose Knights. These days those who bear the standard of one of the Knights of the Rose are the descendants of the original men or women who earned that great honor. Not all children pursue a lifetime in the Knighthood, but those of the bloodlines are well known and when they do become a Knight they bear not only the honor of the Order they join but also the honor of being a Knight of the Rose.
Within Merjoux there are twenty-one Orders of Knights, arranged in two structured tiers, both of which answer to a singular group of Knights who are both large and influential. While many look upon the tiers as measuring some sort of influence of ranking of the Knights, the divisions are simply there based on how numerous and large the Orders are. This is all kept track of by the Order at the very top, The Order of the Golden Rose, which exists outside and above of the tiers of Knights. One tier consists of ten Orders of Knights and they are known, collectively, as The Dawn Knights. The other tiers also consists of ten Orders of Knights and they are known, collectively, as The Dusk Knights.
The Orders of Knights
The Order of the Golden Rose
The largest single Order of Knights within Merjoux, this Order is mainly based within the Capital City of Lamersein and the province of Clairelle. As a fighting force they are effective and their numbers are perhaps a large portion of this. Their real power lies in their closeness with the King and that they are the administrative power among the Orders of Knights. They are the branch which maintains the records which deal with the exploits of the Knightly Orders. This includes, but is not limited to, justice dispensed, information gathered while on patrol, and the location and status of various bloodlines especially those of the Rose Knights. This order was founded by a brother and sister, both of whom were of the bloodline of The Knight of the Golden Rose.

The Order of the Twilight Bells
The first and largest order of Dusk Knights, The Order of the Twilight Bells has its base within Lamersein though its influence is felt across much of the land. Knights of the Order of the Twilight Bells can be found living in or patrolling the provinces of Clairelle, Escarelle, Oranelle, Juanelle, Jadelle, Turelle, and Indelle. Among all the Orders, these Knights are often the most fanatical in reference to the ninth tenet of the Knight’s Code, and they are known to be very strict in their training and unforgiving to needless mistakes.

The Order of the Ashen Scythe
The first and largest order of Dawn Knights, The Order of the Ashen Scythe has its base within Lamersein, though unlike the Twilight Bells their base is not where the majority of their Order resides. The base of the Ashen Scythe within the Capital is only big enough to house the men and woman, generally retired Knights, who receive reports and see they are delivered to the Order of the Golden Rose. The true base of the Ashen Scythe lays within the port city of Feycrest. Knights of the Ashen Scythe can be found patrolling and living in the provinces of Tristelle, Viofelle, Vertelle, Dorelle, Blanchelle, Ametelle and Noirelle. The Ashen Scythe are among the most somber and serious-minded of the Knights.

The Order of the Quiet Owl
One of the second orders of Dusk Knights, The Order of the Quiet Owl has its base within the port city of Escarton in the province of Escarelle. The Quiet Owl has close ties to House Grenat, who rules over the province. They are known for their study of the arcane and the Feywild and have been known to use illusion magic in combat to gain an advantage. They are also some of the most patient of Knights and are very good trackers among the forests. Due to the fact that Escarton holds one of the two major naval shipyards in the kingdom, a large portion of the Quiet Owl often undergo some naval training as well.

One of the second orders of the Dusk Knights, The Order of the Silver Leaf has its base in the city of Tremerie, located in the center of the vast grasslands of the province of Jadelle. The Order of the Silver Leaf has close relations with House Varis and a good reputation among the Commoners of the province. The Silver Leaf also seems to hold the respect of the Orc Tribes who make the plains their home, and many of the horses the Silver Leaf uses are bred from the Orc tribes. This order has the largest number of Orcs within its ranks. They are well known for their bravery and lack of fear in battle.

The Order of the Dragon’s Fang
One of the second orders of the Dawn Knights, The Order of the Dragon’s Fang has its base in the port town of Feycrest in the province of Tristelle. The Dragon’s Fang has very close relations to House Saphir, so close in fact that there are whispers that their loyalty lays with the House before and above the Kingdom, but none will say that were a Knight of the Dragon’s Fang can hear. What is known is that they are well funded, their weapons and armor always being of the best quality and their Knights always having coin to spend. They still perform their duties and patrol the province and keep the peace, but people do wonder how much they look away. This Order, according to at least a few stories, was founded long ago by a Dragonborn who chose to stay within Merjoux, though that may just be a story. What is known is that the Dragon’s Fang itself is a weapon, rumored to be made of ivory, and kept in a hidden location by this Order.

The Order of the Painted Star
One of the second orders of the Dawn Knights, The Order of the Painted Star has its base in the port city of Vasfell in the province of Viofelle. Despite their location they are not known to be close with House Dolite, because while their base is located there, the Knights of the Painted Star travel far and wide and it is possible to find them in nearly any province of Merjoux. Only the Twilight Bells and the Ashen Scythe are more widespread than the Painted Star. Knights of the Painted Star are generally able to fit in with any company and tend to not be rash in action. They seem to hold compassion and mercy as ideals, which may be part of why they are well liked. That being said, when it comes to combat they are no pushovers.

The Order of the Burning Harp
One of the third orders of the Dusk Knights, the Order of the Burning Harp has its base in the large island port city of Barrier in the province of Oranelle. The city of Barrier holds the other major shipyard of the Merjean navy and as such this Order has close ties with the Navy as well as with House Ambre. The Knights of the Burning Harp, while able to ride horses, are much more at home on the naval ships and their patrol tends to be with Oranelle and upon the waters surrounding Merjoux. According to stories, their name comes from the actions the leader of the Order during the rebellion of the Low Houses, several armies moved on the city and burned it down. The leader at the time had his men lying in wait beyond the city and all the people evacuated farther away. He alone remained and stood in the center square playing a mystical harp that enthralled the invading army and kept them there as the city burned around them, and took them all with it.

One of the third orders of the Dusk Knights, The Order of the Blue Hand has its base in the city of Passetou in the province of Turelle. The city sits at the border between Turelle and Juanelle. The Knights of the Blue Hand have close relations with House Perido. They are of note because of the training that they undergo which allows the Order to work together exceptionally well. The precision with which a unit of Knights of the Blue Hand can execute attacks on several places simultaneously, down to the second, is frightening on the receiving end of it. Whether it is only training or perhaps magically assisted, is a moot point. Results matter and the Blue Hand gets results. No Knight of the Blue Hand ever travels alone, they always have a partner with them. Always.

The Order of the Branded Hawk
One of the third orders of the Dusk Knights, The Order of the Branded Hawk has its base in the port city of Watheport in the province of Blanchelle and they have very close relations with House Quaris. As all Branch Families of House Quaris trace their roots to Commoners who have been raised up into noble status, this shows in both the Noble House and in the Knights of the Branded Hawk. Among all of the Orders they are the most pragmatic, and perhaps cynical, of all the Knightly Orders. There have been some rumors that some Knights among the order have taken to ‘selling their sword’ but it has never progressed beyond rumors. What is true is that compared to many of the other Orders, the Knights of the Branded Hawk can, without their tunics on, resemble a band of mercenaries. Also of note, the Branded Hawk has the honor of being home to many Knights of the White Rose. One rather famous Knight of the White Rose, Ser Shanley de Quaris la Sangin, is said to have defeated seven of her uncles, all Knights of the White Rose themselves, in single combat over the course of a week. Her prize for defeating them all was her birthright, which one of her Uncles had inherited upon her father’s death.

This had given them the appearance of being largely ceremonial and not true Knights. They are capable of combat, as any Knight must be, but perhaps they aren’t as sharp as some of the other Orders. They do tend to pride tradition and law perhaps a bit too much. Given their normal duties they are not often seen outside of Lamersein itself, unless they are escorting the Kind or the royal family somewhere.

They journey all over Merjoux, often when requested, and usually in small groups of three to five Knights. According to the stories there is no one they cannot track down. They are often the first ones on any bounty posted by the Justiciers, and may the Gods smile upon you if that is you. They have been known to track a man across the sea and several other lands before bringing them home.

The Order of the Forgotten Revel
One of the fourth orders of the Dawn Knights, The Order of the Forgotten Revel has its base in the port city of Vasfell in the province of Viofelle, and these Knights do have close ties to House Dolite. While most of them can be found on the mainland portion of the province, there is a smaller contingent of Knights on the island who patrol there as well, though many people wonder why as the island is a very peaceful place compared to some areas of Merjoux. There is an old rumor which has been passed down from father to son for centuries that it has something to do with the name of the Order itself. Any curiosity towards this is met with no answers from the Knights themselves beyond it being the way it’s always been, or perhaps who are they to question their superiors.

The Order of the Ebon Wood
One of the fourth orders of the Dawn Knights, The Order of the Ebon Wood has its base in the city of Blosseau in the province of Indelle. The Ebon Wood have close ties to House Zanite and while they are often seen patrolling the lands this is not their only goal. Many of the Knights of the Ebon Wood often patrol the forest itself as a great many Commoners live and work within it. This had given them exceptional skill as knowing the lay of the land within. It is also not unheard of for them to mobilize quickly should fire threaten the wood. Many of them have learned skills from some of the druids who make the forest their home.

The Order of the Dancing Horse
One of the fourth orders of the Dawn Knights, The Order of the Dancing Horse has its base in the city of Berton within the province of Juanelle and they have very close ties to House Citris. The Knights of the Dancing Horse are one of the most honorable of the orders, perhaps even to the point of hurting their own status among the others. It is claimed that a Dancing Horse will never speak a lie, even upon pain of death. They are, of course, excellent horseman and able to ride alongside the very best. Many stories claim that each Knight of the Dancing Horse is paired with a young horse and they form a bond with that horse during their time spent learning to become a Knight.

The Order of the Stone Falcon
One of the fourth orders of the Dawn Knights, The Order of the Stone Falcon has its base in the city of Rigelle in the province of Tristelle. While it is claimed this order has no close ties to House Saphir, their order is small and exists not just within their territory but also within the very seat of their power. While their base is within the city, it is little more than a small manor house from which the important clerical duties are handled. The true bulk of the Knights forces train and work out of small fortress built upon the mountain that dominates that end of the island. They are a very mysterious and standoffish order that has been known to turn away those who come looking to join. You do not seek out the Stone Falcons, it is said. They seek you out.
