Player Character-Specific Equipment
*Homebrew - I'll do a quick poll before starting the campaign to see if anyone would like this addition.
Each player character starts with a magical item (e.g., ring, weapon, armor, trinket) that is related to their past. This magical item has a very minor benefit, does not require attunement, and cannot be used by others. Each time you make significant progress in the personal objectives of your character, this item becomes stronger (up to 3 times). It probably makes the most sense for player characters to only focus on their immediate next objective, as opposed to all of their objectives. This mechanic allows each player to indicate which effects/items they want their player character to have.
We will probably have to strategize how we can best fit your character and their objective into the world, where I'll try to make it so that the individual aims of each player character of the team can be completed within close proximity. In short, I'll make sure that one character objective isn't on one side of the world, and another character objective is in the city nearby. In addition, I'll make sure that the individual character aims are part of the general storyline.
A few examples:
- A warlock received a ring from their patron and do not know any information on their patron. So they go out and seek information on who their patron is and what the aims of their patron are. The ring will receive an upgrade when the following objectives are met: 1) the warlock learns the name of their patron; 2) the warlock learns the aim of their patron; 3) the warlock accomplishes the aim of their patron.
- A barbarian's home village was attacked and swears to avenge them. He still has an ax from those who attacked the village. The ax will receive an upgrade when the following objectives are met: 1) the barbarian learns who ordered the attack and why; 2) the barbarian kills who led the attack; 3) the barbarian kills who ordered the attack.
- A cleric receives a trinket from their god and wants to strengthen their devotion to their god. The trinket will receive an upgrade when the following objectives are met: 1) the cleric prays at a shrine dedicated to their god; 2) the cleric starts a church devoted to their god; 3) the cleric returns a significant and precious item to their god.
