The Dark Star Observers

Bel'Zanar, the immense artificial planetoid that lurks at the edge of the Sol System, is powered by the Dark Star; a tamed black hole wrought at the height of the Old Ones Empire long ago. Fed by a constant stream of matter the Dark Star gives life to Bel'Zanar, powering its industrial might and granting the station its military power.

The Dark Star is an old and complex machine whose maintenance is performed by the religious order of the Dark Star Observers; a mysterious sect devoted to nurturing and worshipping the Dark Star who they see as a divine God. The rulers of Bel'Zanar, the Mesitori, see the Observers as insane relics of a past best forgotten yet accept without them, Bel'Zanar would perish. Thus the Observers serve as the Third of Three, the religious power of Bel'Zanar alongside that of the military and the ruling nobles.

Within the Sacred Inner Sanctum which houses the Dark Star the Chosen of the Observers gather to watch and intrepert the voice of their God. This is considered the highest calling amongst the Observers, a position only the most faithful, pure and devoted may attain. They sit crossed legged in a great ring around the Dark Star, clad in white and fed intravenously so that they may devote their life entirely to this most sacred of tasks.

These most high ordained suffer for their devotion as their eyes are burned from their sockets. Yet still, they see their God and and hear its whispers and speak it in an incomprehensible babble to outsiders yet to the faithful are part of the Dark Star's Eternal Hymn. It is the duty of the Observers to study the Hymn and interpret its meaning.

There is some speculation that there is more to the Dark Star than would first appear. Some amongst the Mesitori believe it not to be a Black Hole at all. What it is, they do not know and fear delving too deep into that mystery lest they anger the Observers and trigger a schism between the Trinity that would likely destroy Bel'Zanar. There is also the fact that on more than one occasion the seemingly insane and incomprehensible ramblings of the Observers have revealed insights into events to come and aided Bel'Zanar in both great and small ways.

Why their eyes are burned from their sockets? Is this part of their faith or an effect of being an observer? It's interesting that there is a suggestion that they see the future.

In truth i don’t know. I had this idea of a “tamed” black hole inside a planetoid ship/space station. The idea of a quasi techno- theocratic group that sees this incredible technology as divine and over the centuries as a god appealed to me. Or maybe there is an eldritch nightmare just waiting to hatch. When i start a nea world i am going to build from this

I really like the idea of a futuristic setting where science and religion blend together like this, with something we understand as scientific in the present becomes religious in the future instead of today's religions being explained by the future's science. Nicely done! -Yarrow

Incredibly flavorful article. I mean this in the best possible way- I can imagine such visceral imagery from the WH40k universe. There’s a great deal of ‘fantasy’ terms (names and concepts specific to your setting that are not self-evident) and yet there’s enough context clues and substance to get pulled in and invites me to check different parts of the world. I highly recommend hyperlinking to other articles and concepts, since you did such a good job of getting this reader’s attention.

Thank you very much. I have started a new version of Ascension Space (v.5) using a lot of the ideas from summer camp like this article to build from. Once i have few articles done i will go public.
