Great Konigal
On my trip northward, I had the opportunity to dine with a Cheiftain of the Konigalese, his home was a modest affair far more rugged than that of more Southern Nobility, the Greathall acted both as court and feasting place for the multitude of the town with a great firepit ever burning in its centre. There was no distinction there among them between noble and commoner, though the Chieftain and his nearest kin sat in a position of prominence before the fire, he shared his table not just with our party but with swineherds, farmers and tanners alike. Each man, said he, was of their own value to Great Konigal, none greater or lesser in the feasting hall. Together they supped on an immense beast that they had hunted in the mountains earlier that summer. It was an amazing sight to behold as it roasted over the fire; a saurian beast at least twice the size of an ox or more. This I was told was far from the largest beast that could be found in the deeper reaches of the Dragon Spine. The Chieftain himself was of an intriguing specimen, possessing a diluted grey-green palour often indicative of Urokal ancestry, this combined with his stature and physique led me to question and with some pride he confirmed his lineage. By way of his grandmother to the Boartle's Maw tribe, which some weeks later I would be traveling alongside. The interbreeding of the tribes of Urok, Man, and Torv have produced a hardy and brawn people. Fitting of the reputation as fearsome and savage warriors. ~ Father Telinn Ossiman, Excerpted from "The Northern Expeditions" c. 1432 AC
Great Konigal
Curving along the North-Eastern edge of the Hraldan Valley atop the wide and flat plateau which rises precipitously above the snaking Inisfral River lies the Kingdom of Konigal or "Great Konigal" as it is known to its peoples. The land's height and leeward position from the great Westerly Trade Winds impart a characteristic dryness over the land which leaves much of Konigal as a vast grassland steppe. The wide steppeland offers little in the way of arable farmland, but has long sustained the great herds of wild beasts and a thriving population of herdsmen and hunters. Archeologists and scholars believe that the region has been inhabited by humans far into prehistory even into the Dawn Ages of Mortals. Evidence of Giant's Mounds, rubbled Stele and Cairn Culture structures place the first definitive civilizations here to at least the last 20,000 years. The first surviving chronicles concerning Konigal would be written down Arumnian Scholars in the 1st Century AC. As missionaries began to move deeper into Hraldan lands, they spoke of many tribes of herdsmen and petty kingdoms on the Chonical Steppe. At the height of the Arumnian Empire permanent colonies were established along the Inisfral River up to the reaches of the Dragonspine Mountains, however the interior Steppe did not significant development during this period. The Empire set goal concerned only that they convert any tribes in close contact and otherwise to leave them in peace. Steppeman Converts would occasionally see work as auxiliary riders in the Legions, and from their riches and fame return to carve out large domains on the steppe. This continued throughout much of the Age of the Covenant, until the Arumsfall. Like most of the Hraldan, Konigal would not be affected by the First Scourge, except that Imperial Levies drained much of the manpower from the region and contributed to growing instability. However the Second Scourge would see a demonic host enter and raise several towns along the southern border of what is now Konigal.
Structure
Great Konigal is a semi-feudal and tribal state, at its most formalized and feudal around the more settled areas of the Inisfral River and Lake Chayorre, and most tribal along the great plateau and foothills of the Konthal Mountains that hug Konigal's northern edge. Both Chieftains and Lords are considered to be of equal status beneath the High Queen, and all assemble at least twice annually for the moot, where matters of state are discussed. Though the High Queen may call a moot at any time.
