Argenin - Manfolk
"If you find yourself in need of a bridge, a highway, or an aqueduct,
If you've got trolls in your hills or bandits on your by-lanes,
If, by chance, you find yourself with over-abudance of paperwork,
and you could use someone that will genuinely enjoy doing it for you.
In all those things, you will find no greater friend than an Argenin.
And if you should seek a comforting shoulder or a poem to lift your weary heart
—You'd be better off trying the hill trolls.
The Argenin are the native manfolk of the Argenin Peninsula, specifically those that originate from their Empire's capital city, Argenople. Though the term is often broadly applied to any mannish inhabitant of Argenia as a whole and even to all mannish citizens of the Argenine Empire.
It cannot be understated that the growth of their Empire as been built on the back of the martial and administrative diligence that had long been fostered in their homeland. The Argenin are a strict, austere and extremely principled people, unrivaled in their discipline.
Culture
Foods & Cuisine
"Why do the Argenin march for 12 hours straight each a day?
Because if they stop they'll have to eat Argenin food."
"How do you know if there's a Speculatore at your feast?
He'll be the one complaining that the onions in your soup are too spicy."
"Who has the guts to upset the legion's power? No one.
What has the power to upset a legionary's guts? Paprika."
Argenin are infamously known for their plain tastes and austere diets. Though as ever, embellishments often spin truths into fiction.
It is not true, as many would claim that the Argenin survive entirely on pork pottages, cabbage, brown bread, and butter. Nor that they faint at the whiff of pepper or cinnamon.
What is true, is that the Argenin cuisine has long been, like its people, centered on practical needs, and unconcerned with the appearance of luxury. It is also perhaps, more than any other culture, a statement of the deep egalitarian ethos of its people.
It is not surprising that the Argenin are content with simple cuisine, this is the lot of the great majority of across every realm. The only surprise is that Argenin nobility would willingly eat as their commoners do.
But let us not err too far in their favour, to say that the noble houses of the Empire "eat as commoners" is only so true as the sense that a lord sleeping beneath furs by a tended fire is the same as the soldier in his burlap ruck sleeping shoulder to shoulder are the same for "sleeping in a tent."
The rich eat what resembles the food of the poor, but they are not forced to make the same compromises, nor are they so limited, in what they might grasp to stir into the pot.
