Pertome Mountains

The Pertome Mountains take up a large amount of the island of Pertome, and are well known for their lack of transversal paths. Due to this, there is very little interaction between the northern and southern ends of the island, as a journey by boat takes to long for it to be worth sending a messenger at all. Even if a traveler were able to navigate through the mountains, the dangers they would face along the way would practically guarantee they wouldn't reach their destination.

Geography

There is very little ground in the Pertome Mountains that is smooth or flat. Any journey through the mountains will require a large amount of climbing, much of which is likely to be difficult and dangerous. Most of the ground that isn't occupied by mountains is made up of deep canyons and the few areas of traversable ground is likely inhabited by the denizens of the mountains.

Fauna & Flora

A few coniferous trees and shrubs grow throughout the mountains, but for the most part there isn't much soil for plants to grow in. The caves of the Pertome Mountains are inhabited by stone giants, kobolds, and the various monstrous creatures that lurk in caves such as cave fishers, basilisks, and, in the higher up portions of the mountains, behirs. Travelers outside of the caves will have to deal with rocs, wyverns, perytons, hippogriffs, bullettes, griffons, and chimeras. And on the very highest peak of the mountain range, lives a storm giant named Halvar [link to an article later].

Natural Resources

Many metals and gems can be found in the canyons throughout the Pertome Mountains, which has caused the people of Pertome to open many mines there. Working in the Pertome Mountains can be dangerous work, however, the beasts living in the mountains wouldn't hesitate to prey upon the workers, and there is always the risk of breaking into a cave occupied by stone giants or some other cave dwelling monster.
