Kaldar Frostlands

The Kaldar Frostlands are a barren and frozen stretch of land along the entire northern coast of [continent]. The Frostlands were not always this way, however; 600 years ago, the Kaldar Empire lived in these lands and were extremely prosperous, they were extremely magically adept and became very wealthy by selling these items to the armies of other countries. The Kaldari people began experimenting widely with planar travel, trying to create stones that would open large planar portals, capable of transporting a large group of people between planes. One test of these stones was to send a small party to the Plane of Water and back, unfortunately, an error in the creation of the stone opened a portal to the Frostfell, or Plane of Ice. Rather than allowing entry from a small area, the stone allowed the Plane of Ice to spill into the material plane, turning Kaldar into a frozen wasteland, now called the Kaldar Frostlands.

Geography

The Kaldar Frostlands are quite simply a barren, frozen, wasteland. There is little variation in the land beyond occasional hills and lakes or rivers that have been frozen over for centuries.

Localized Phenomena

In the very center of the Kaldar Frostlands, where the gateway to the Plane of Ice was opened, creatures will occasionally be transported to the Plane of Ice, although they sometimes don't realize at first because the Plane of Ice is so similar to the Frostlands. The only clue that a creature is nearing this area is the sudden presence of Ice Mephits and the constant blizzards that plague the area becoming somehow even worse.

Fauna & Flora

No plants grow in the Kaldar Frostlands, and the ecosystem is purely based on survival of the fittest. Frost Giants and Winter Wolves migrated down to the Frostlands from the Horthar Mountains and were faced with yetis, remorhazes, and even a few white dragons from the Plane of Ice.

Tourism

Very few creatures live in the Kaldar Frostlands, and none of them are humanoids. Not even barbarian tribes venture here out of superstition. The only times humanoids visit this area is out of greed; the wealth and magical items previously under possession of the Kaldar Empire are extremely valuable and adventurers will occasionally brave the cold and dangerous inhabitants and delve into Kaldari ruins in search of wealth and power.
