URSIDIA (ur-sid-ia)
Summary
Ursidias are a beast tribe that are found throughout most of Aretz, and are members of the beast races who formed civilizations. They are known for their determination, strength, intellect, and hardiness. They have generally good relations with the other beast races, having maintained enough cordialness with them over the centuries. Clades There are currently four known clades of Ursidias in Aretz that have unique traits that define their branch. Although they all share common features as members of the Ursidia beast race. The four current clades of Ursidias are:- Marctos ("spectacled"): Marctos are a clade of Ursidia that are known to be considered "short-faced" due to their facial features (mainly their noses) being shorter that typical Ursidias. They are a mid-sized branch of Ursidia with blackish fur that can also range from jet black, dark brown, or even a reddish hue. They also have a distinctive beige or ginger-colored marking across their faces and upper chests, giving them their name. These markings can be slightly different on each individual, making identifying them much easier.
- Meloth ("Sloth"): Meloths are mid-sized Ursidias that have long shaggy fur with a mane around their faces, and long sickle-shaped claws. They also tend to be lankier than other Ursidias. One notable trait is that Meloths are known to be especially gentle with cubs. They are excellent runners, climbers, and swimmers. Meloths are also known to stand their ground quite readily when provoked despite their size. They are found in lands in the continent of Lavantia and other places.
- Melyanus ("sun"): Meyanus, or yanus in short, are Ursidias that are stockily built with large paws, strong curved claws, rounded ears, and a short snout. Their fur is shorter than most Ursidias with colors ranging from jet black to grey to red. Melyanus are notable for the orange or cream-colored chest patch of fur. Members of the Melyanus clade are also known for their craftiness.
- Tanus ("Black"): Tanus are Ursidia that are famous for their adaptability and being second in physical size to the Arctus clade. Males are larger than females. Their fur is soft with dense underfur that is not as shaggy or coarse as that of Arctus Ursidias. Interestingly, despite their name Tanus can have fur color ranging from black to even silvery-gray.
- Arctus ("Brown"): Arctus are the largest members of Ursidias that are known for their strength, intelligence, their fur color (ranging from brown to reddish with silver-tipped hairs), strong claws with a blunt curve, and powerful jaws. Male Arctus are larger than females.
Basic Information
Anatomy
Ursidia have varying feature based on their particular tribe, but all do share common physical characteristics. Ursidias generally have large strong bodies, stocky legs, long hair (ranging from well-kept to shaggy), mid-to-long snouts, mostly small rounded ears, hands with five digits (with each finger having a non-retractable claw), and short tails. Ursidias also have a excellent sense of smell, able to detect scents for miles.
Ursidias have fur that consist of long guard hairs that form a protective covering along with short dense hairs that create a insulating layer. This helps them preserve body heat during the Cold season. They also have different shades of brown, white, black, and mixed colors.
Civilization and Culture
Courtship Ideals
Courtship among Ursidia is more simplistic in approach as they do not put much stock in courting unlike other beast races. There can be some brief wrestling, hugging, vocalizing, and mock fighting involved. However, this is on a per-individual basis.
Relationship Ideals
Ursidia's relationship ideals can be described as either serial monogamy, promiscuity, or polygyny (one male lives with multiple females but each female only mates with a few males) depending on those involved. There is no marriage involved as that is seen as a "human thing."

Average Physique
Ursidias are adept runners as they are capable of running at high speeds for a period of time before tiring. They are also excellent climbers with trees and mountains being within their ability to climb in most cases.
