Snatchers in the Woods

In the pit the snatchers sit; eat you up from rump to tit!
— A rather vulgar children's rhyme from Woodside

What likely started out as a simple tale to keep children out of the dangerous Caexvudd, quickly turned into an local folk legend. For yet unknown reasons, sinkholes sometimes form in the deeper sections of the forest. Among the possible causes discussed are the "Snatchers". Monsters, fae, or spirits of the land, are said to hide in the sinkholes, dragging in anyone who would pass by.

"Snatcher sitting in your pit, don't come up or I will spit!" was a warding rhyme often chanted by children as they passed by spots they believe Snatchers live. Local children would often dare each other to venture into the forest and bring back proof they bested the Snatchers. All fun and games to them of course, until their friend doesn't return.

Snatchers never had a consistent description, varying from child to child, oft reflecting whatever they feared most. However, the Snatchers would often be described as having long fingers, nails, necks, round toothy maws, and drooping ears.

The Caexvudd is home to various wild beasts and is largely unexplored due to its dense foliage; As its name implies, wandering the "Sword Forest" without a blade to defend oneself is foolish beyond a doubt.
