Fae

In times without wonder or whimsy, fae (or fey) are often considered to be creatures of myth, folklore, and superstition. However, they are most certainly real. They rule over the domains known as the Feywilds, and to a certain extent are physically linked to their domains.

The nature of fae is largely a mystery, but there are a variety of theories ranging from plausible to insane. What is certain, however, is that most fae are extraordinarily powerful, with lords of Feywild domains being able to rival the feats of minor gods.

Some believe fae to hail from the Shadowfell, with shadow fusing to plants, beasts, and bugs in order to anchor themselves to our plane.

A common misconception is that fae are bound by their word, as if some higher magic compels them to. They are not. This myth stems from tales of fae that offer deals to outsiders, trading strange aspects for mundane boons. Most often these are simple folk tales where the aspects bring traded reflect some larger moral lesson to be learned from the narrative. Some scholars of the arcane have pointed out that there may be some truth behind the tales; consent from their targets may allow fae to pull off more difficult feats of magic.
