The Confederation of The Lowland Provinces

The Confederation Of The Lowland Provinces consists of the provinces of Colmsfirth, Ortyne, Dunkeep, Alrun and Reidshire. These provinces were once divided and hostile but are now united in their common culture and struggle for survival. These Provinces once fought but common enemies forced them together and they are now one of the major powers in Arcus. The capital of the Confederation is Dunkeep: one of the largest settlments in the whole of ARCUS.

History

The Unification war and The Battle of Lark's Crossing The Confederation of the Lowland Provinces was created when the 5 indepedent provinces of Reidshire, Ortyne, Colmsfirth, Dunkeep and Alrun were threateend by the Kralskor empire. The five lowland provinces had fought for centuries but when the Kralskor Army of 40,000 marched down from the mountians to take the provinces the five dukes of the provinces gathered at Dunkeep. The dukes agreed to combine their forces and from a union to defeat Kralskor's army. The dukes went away to raise their armies and then marched to the east towards the river Hyde to meet the Kralskor army whilst they were still halfway across. The army of the five provinces marched for 3 days before meeting the Kralskor army at Lark's crossing. About half of the kralskor army had crossed to the western bank by a hastily constructed wooden bridge and the rest of their men had to wait to cross. The lowland cavalry led by Prince montogomery suprised the Kralaskor army on the western bank, whilst the lowland cannon opened fire on the bridge and completely destroyed it. The fighting was fierce but the Kralskor forces on the western bank were taken by suprise and not fully armed so none of their muskets were ready. Montogomery and his cavalry trampled the kralskor infantry and soon they were panicked and routed. With the kralskor king on the far bank, it was up to the prince Vengir to try and rally his troops. He called out to his men to stand and fight as he fought furiously on his black horse. Prince montogomery surged forward towards Vengir and after a short exchange of steel and blood Vengir lay dead on the sand of the river bank; missing both his arms.   After two hours of slaughter the Kralskor king saw from the far side of the bank that half his army was gone and the day was lost. He ordered the rest of his forces to retreat back to the mountains. The invasion was over. The Lowland army went home and disbanded and the 5 Dukes gathered again to celebrate the victory. The duke of Ortyne suggested that in case of a future invasion that the Provinces should remain united under a single king. It was put to a vote and the dukes voted unanimously on keeping the union as long as they decided on a king . The War of The two Princes However on returning home the duke of Alrun was stabbed in his sleep by his son the villanious Edmund of Alrund. Edmund declared a rebellion against the confederation, wanting the five provinces to stay indepedent. he declared hismelf prince of Alrund. Soon rebel armies gathered in other provinces and began fighting with the loyalist forces of the dukes. The dukes had just disbanded their armies so had to recall their armies, possesing fewer soldiers than before. The dukes returned to their home provinces and began fighting the rebels. This became known as the war of the two princes. Prince motogomery fought with the loyalsits becoming one of their most famous and powerfull fighters. After 4 months of fighting the rebels converged on the capital; Dunkeep where the Dukes had gathered their forces and made a stand. The rebels led by Edmund stormed the outer walls with siege towers as the loyalists desperatley fought to hold the walls. Eventually the rebels overran the walls but with heavy losses. The rebels surged deeper into the city but were halted by the experienced loaylists who held the line for a week. During this time Prince Montgomery, who had left the city with his elite cavalry went around the provinces gathering loyal troops who were idle now that the rebels had converged on Dunkeep. Montgomery ammased a force of 15,000 well trained men who then set off for Dunkeep. The relief forces arrived just as it looked as if the lines would break. The inexperinced rebel rearguard on the outskirts of the city were taken by suprise and quickly swept aside. Montgomery's army tooked over the city walls cutting off the lines of supply of Edmund's army. Without proper food the rebels were doomed and the Dukes quickly swept the rebels from their posssitions in the inner city. The last of Edmund's forces were hemmed in at the old quarter and realising there was no hope of victory surrendered and was executed the next day. With Edmund dead the rebel cause collapsed and the lowland provinces were united.
