Variant 1
In this story there is a woodsman who while cutting wood stumbled upon a fairy and in exchange for not cutting the faire's tree He was granted 3 wishes. He uses these wishes foolishly and accidentally spending the first on a link of black pudding, the second spent by his wife attaching the pudding to the woodsmans nose and the last to get the pudding off his nose. This is a variation on the Gambling Hansel tale because of the prevalence of the three wishes which are all spent and all cause misfortune to the user at the end of the tale. The main differences are that the wishes for Gambling Hansel end in great fortune while the wishes for woodsman only end in misfortune. In both cases a common theme is the catering towards a persons own indulgences where the woodsman succumbs to his hunger while Hansel succumbs to his gambling addiction. In this way, the relevant themes are still true for both tales causing them to be variations of each other.
