Fairies
Historically speaking, "fairy" is a broad term synonymous with "creature from the Feywild." This could be a pixie, a sprite, a dryad, or more liberally, creatures like hags , quicklings and redcaps. However, technically speaking, a fairy is a specific form of fey that resembles their pixie and sprite cousins, but scaled up to the size of a human child as opposed to a creature that can comfortably sit in the palm of a human adult's hand.
Prior to the Great Collision of the Planes at the conclusion of The Extinction War, fairies (and for that matter, most fey creatures) were rarely seen outside of their homes in the Feywild. With the fallout of the Planes intermingling in such a violent manner though, many previously unseen beings have become more and more common on the Material Plane (i.e., harengon, changelings, eladrin, etc).
Like all fey, fairies do not reproduce through "traditional" means, despite their humanoid appearance. Indeed, the means by which new fairies are born remains a vexing mystery. It seems they spontaneously animate from lesser lifeforms like wildlife or plants, but where the spark of true consciousness comes from is anybody's guess.
In addition to this, fairies are "born" fully formed and developed (at least physically) and do not physically age as mortals do. It is even speculated that fairies share a common trait among fiends and celestials in that if their body is destroyed on the Material Plane, they'll simply reform in the Feywild. Shockingly, none have yet volunteered to test this particular theory.
