The Giants

Basic Information

Anatomy

Giants are humanoid in form, but giants lower in the Ordning tend to be more misshapen to most eyes than their relatives who are higher in rank.

Genetics and Reproduction

The giants reproduce sexually, although at a much slower rate than do humans.

Growth Rate & Stages

Giants mature at a slower rate than do humans, but go through similar growth stages.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Most giants have a meat heavy diet, and must eat at least sixteen pounds of food and drink sixteen gallons of water a day.

Additional Information

Social Structure

The social position of all giants is defined by the Ordning, which serves as a strict caste structure followed by all giants. Storm giants are at the top, followed by cloud, fire, frost, stone, and hill giants. The highest-ranking hill giant is still inferior to the lowest of stone giants in the Ordning. This strict social structure has allowed the remaining giants to retain cohesion, even after the fall of their civilization.

Facial characteristics

Most giants have craggy faces fit to scare the living daylights out of anyone who gets too good a look at them; most giants, especially those belonging to races lower on the Ordning, have some form of facial abnormality that is abhorrent to other humanoids.

Geographic Origin and Distribution

Most of the remaining giant population resides in the Reaches.

Average Intelligence

The lowliest of giants, the hill giants, are not extremely intelligent. However, the farther up the Ordning a giant is, the higher their intelligence is likely to be.

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Giants who are higher in the Ordning tend to have more magical sensory capabilities than those who are lower.

Civilization and Culture

Major Language Groups and Dialects

All giants speak some version of Giant, often with a form associated with their place in the Ordning.

Common Etiquette Rules

While giants share a common culture and history, it is not considered treasonous to betray a giant of lesser standing in the Ordning.

Common Dress Code

Any form of clothing is typically acceptable as long as it covers the important parts of a giant's body.

History

The giants once ruled a large portion of the Reaches, and came into conflict with the dragonborn. The two civilizations engaged in a great war that ravaged the land, and ultimately caused the downfall of both of their civilizations.

Common Myths and Legends

It is said that Annam, the father of all giants, forsook the race he created when their kingdom fell, and swore to have nothing to do with the world they inhabited until they regained their place. Most giants therefore pray to the divine offspring of Annam: Stronmaus, Memnor, Skoraeus Stonebones, Thrym, Surtur, and Grolantor, for who are often associated with storm, cloud, stone, frost, fire, and hill giants, respectively. Other deities include Hiatea, who is a huntress and a guardian of the hearth, Iallanis, goddess of love and peace, and Diancastra, a trickster akin to Memnor.

Interspecies Relations and Assumptions

The giants despise most of the smaller races, but their hatred of the dragonborn and dragons surpasses all others.
Lifespan
The lifespan of the current generation of giants is about 400 years, but were once much longer; before the fall of the giant kingdoms, giants often lived for a thousand years.
Average Height
The average height of giants is different for each race; hill giants, at the shortest end of the spectrum, are typically about sixteen feet tall, while storm giants are about twenty-six feet tall.
Average Physique
Giants can range from blobby to extremely muscular and well built.
Body Tint, Colouring and Marking
The coloration of giants varies by race to race.
