Knocking on Wood
History
It's believed that the tradition of knocking on wood, most often trees, was begun by humans during the time when elves still ruled much of the continent as a form of paying respect and asking forest spirits for aid. Over time, it has developed to encompass any kind of wood, and is also done as a ward against bad luck. Whether any spirits pay attention to such things is unknown.
Execution
In the past, people traditionally used live trees, but any piece of wood will suffice in the current era. The person performing what loosely may be called a "rite" must simply knock their hand against the wood.

Observance
This is traditionally done when an individual says something that they hope will remain true, or as a way of asking for general good luck.
