Blood Moon
A blood moon is a rare celestial occurrence that happens during a full moon where the moon turns a deep crimson at midnight.
Note: A blood moon is not to be confused with a hunter's moon or a red moon that happens during a full lunar eclipse.
The exact nature of the blood moon is not known. Whether it is a cosmological phenomena, some matter of magic, or some odd technological feature of the moon itself. There is also no information available on why the blood moon only starts at midnight nor is there any reliable metric by which one can predict when a blood moon will occur. It seems to be entirely random.
It's effects, however, are well known and quite dangerous.
Any dead, sapient body which is touched red moonlight is twisted and contorted into a monstrosity that rises, neither living nor dead. Even living people try to avoid it as it would often illicit hallucinations or nightmares. Blackout curtains on windows, avoiding being outside. There is no known remedy for the transformation that occurs to the dead and little in the way that can be done to avoid nightmares if exposed to the blood moon's light. The nightmare effect, however, only lasts one or two nights after exposure.
Thankfully, the blood moon is extremely rare occurring as little as once every few years though there have been occasions where the blood moon has occurred multiple times per year. The most that have ever been recorded were in 2981 CE where 12 blood moon events were noted, one for each month of the year. It should also be noted that there has never been a blood moon multiple nights in a row.
