Healer

... a practitioner of the medical and magical Healing Arts!

"With empathy and grace, the Healer listens to the wounded and ails their afflictions. Their burden is the Lives of others. The weight of that responsibility is in their healing hands, holding sway over the forces of Life and Death. When a Healer's heart darkens, we all suffer their pain. Who heals the Healer?"
— Villager, Source

Magic is a universal force that moves through all things, acknowledged as an attunement to Source. There are those who are attuned deeply to the forces of Life and Death Magic, known as Healers. By learning Healing Divinations, Healers are able to perform miraculous recoveries.
Injuries and disease are fought with the power of a Healer's will. The best Healers are a force of good, using their magical talents to aid their Tribesmen. Evil Healers spread afflictions, causing as much devastation as possible. This group is often referred to as Defilers- who use their Healing talents for maligned purpose.

In matters of the body and mind, most visited with a reputable Healer. While the Shaman often led the Tribes, a Healer was more accessible to most. They spent most of their Time consulting with the sick and grief-stricken, seeking cures, or promoting the Tribe's values.

The Healer becomes a pillar of their community, as many will barter with the Healer for their healing services. As it's rare to possess the skills to be a Healer, it's a dignified position in any community.

Becoming a Healer

Healers are either born or made. While it is possible to be born with the magical properties needed to become a Healer, others spend their Lives learning anatomy or medicine before Magic awakens. Many learn from a Healer, Shaman, or one who has medical knowledge. This helps to unlock their latent abilities.
Young Healers possess a strong desire to support others. While this is often manifested through their Magic, it's also seen in their actions. They care for their communities and do as much to prevent harm as to heal it. Healers who have the confidence of their Tribe are supported in their Healer's Journey.

Skills & Expertise

Healing Hand

The most notable quality of the Healer is their ability to channel healing magic through the palms of their hands. With a simple lay of hands, the Healer can restore vitality by focusing their Magic into a stream or channel. The recepient is infused with the vital Life energy the Healer provides.
The focused channel of restorative magic often leaves a Healer fatigued thereafter. However, the relief that is administered is almost immediate. The Healer learns to adapt their powers to new kinds of ailments, eliminating disease, poisons, and even some magical curses.

Tools & Materials

Mortar & Pestle

This simple tool is comprised of a small bowl, usually made of stone or clay, and a small stone pestle used to crush herbs. Many Healers carry a Mortar & Pestle to expand their abilities to provide healing without Magic.
To use a Mortar & Pestle, a Healer seeks various healing herbs and roots. Using their medical knowledge, they create infusions and poultices. This connection to nature often leads many to discovering new cures.

Purpose & Progression

Healers begin by studying with others or developing their medicinal talents through a process called the Healer's Journey. On top of this, many strengthen their connection to nature and develop on their understanding of the World. Once a Healer has worldly knowledge, they begin to accept new roles within their Tribes.
Most Healers become or even replace Shamans after spending Time learning their Magic. The Mendicants were Healers known for traveling the land, their insights later shaping medical practice. Some became Harbingers- combat medics who dispensed Life and Death on the primitive battlefields.

Cultural Role & Identity

Aelven Healers

Aelves held a long tradition of Healers. This role was crucial to promoting the long-lives of the immortal Aelves. Their Healers learned many specialized Divinations, such as Sanguimancy or Vivamancy, and used these talents to extend the Life of their Tribe. Aelven Healers were taught sacred rituals, often performed under the guidance of a higher authority, such as a Shaman.
Aelven Healers were considered more common amongst the Aelves than other Cultures due to their inherent connection with Magic. They used this power to help them heal their lands.

Aelven Healers used their Magic agriculturally to restore damaged crops, encourage crop growth, bolster crop health, or to bring an end toa plague or pestilence.

Historical Significance

Healers held an important role in passing on the magical and medicinal practices to their descendants. Generations of Healers would serve a Tribe with their ancestral knowledge of the healing arts. Their influence on early tools used in medicine still holds today as common implements, such as stints, bandaging, and even prosthetics are still practiced today.
The role of Healer was diminished over Time, when more modern medicinal practices became accessible. The Healer's Arts was absorbed by magical scholars and later magical traditions. Those spells went on to create new applications of the Magic. While the role of Healer isn't as prominent today, their healing touch has been left upon the face of History.

Author's Notes

This is 3/31 Article in the March of 31 Tales, brought to you by Demongrey!

Real Talk: This morning, Healer didn't exist. Shaman did. Healer didn't. However, after some pondering, I decided that it seemed more likely for a Healer to become a Shaman than a Shaman to become a Healer. Plus, this gives me some room to make Shaman a Prestige Class, instead, and preserve Druid for future Base Classes in other Themes. Still, most of this work is placeholder atm anyway, which includes the Base and Prestige Classes, so we'll see if Healer survives to the final draft. As it stands, I really like the idea conceptually! Let me know what you think!

I'm also thinking of enhancements on these Articles as I'm writing them. I think I'll include the full list of Base Classes by theme in these Articles too. What do you think?

Let me know in the ocmments below if you have other ideas!
