Diviner

... those who inspire others with a vision of Magic!

"Of the mysteries of Magic, there are those who practice the Divinations. Visions guide their spells, infusing their words with a mystic Will as they invoke the night. By appeasing the Spirits of the Unseen Worlds, they are granted their magical talents. Why do you seek their power, Diviner?"
— Villager, Source

Before a Time of organized magical tradition, Magic was wild and primal, flowing between conduits of Source. Those who learned to interpret the ley of Source were first referred to as the Diviners. Possessed of a keen sense for Magic, the Diviners were the first to inscribe spells into written formats.
Furthermore, all magical understanding in the ancient World was based on the collected work of cross-Cultural Diviners. Runes, scrolls, and tomes kept the memory of spell-work vital for later generations, forming the earliest understanding of the later magical traditions and acknowledging the first practices of Spell-Craft.

In addition, Diviners learn how to forge bonds with extraplanar entities. Most commonly, Diviners follow a Deity, but they also make contact with greater or lesser spirits, Fey, Undead, Eidolon, and more. This patron communicates with the Diviner, granting them an auxiliary access to Source.
The Diviner has tapped into the font of magical phenomenon- the Source. These Casters attune themselves to Source through trance, meditations, and prophecies granted by their connection. By creating a universal magical language, Diviners spend most of their Life understanding Magic and contacting extra-planar Deities and Spirits.

Scholars of the Arcane were also well versed in languages. As part of their research, they create a language for understanding the World through Magic. This language is interpreted by the Universal Will and re-writes reality in the Diviner's vision. This forms the basis for all Magical practices, known collectively as the Divinations.

Becoming a Diviner

While everything possesses a connection to Source, there are few who learn to unlock its' mysteries. Aid from a Deity or Spirit can help to unlock the Diviner's potential, but isn't always necessary. Once realized, Diviners learn the universal language needed to craft spells and receive visions.
Whether through a mortal or transcendent guide, the Diviner apprentices with similar individuals until they are considered proficient with the specific Divination. While they learn other spells and Divinations, a Diviner specializes in their studies, making them experts of their specialty.

Skills & Expertise

Decipher Arcane

One of the more universal skills possessed by Diviners, the ability to read and understand various languages allows the Diviner to read and interpret different forms of magical spells. Divinations differ in their practice from Culture to Culture, thus understanding these nuances makes Diviners excellent cross-cultural ambassadors and efficient Spell-Casters.
Diviners craft spells with a universal language referred to as the Arcane. Learning to read and write in the Arcane script also provides the Diviner with an understanding of other languages. While not all Diviners are polyglots, even those with one language benefit from the ability to identify spells used in spell matrices, such as runes, glyphs, or enchanted items.

Tools & Materials

Divining Tools

When a Diviner chooses to study the Divinations, they choose a special device, known as a Divining Tool, to make their predictions and receive their visions. Using this simple tool, a Diviner is able to make predictions and forecasts, intuit direction or correct action, or as a conduit to receive spiritual guidance.
The following is a list of common tools for this purpose:
  • Dowsing Rods
  • Pendulums
  • Looking Glass
  • Scrying Bowl
  • Bag of Runes
* This is not a complete list.

Purpose & Progression

The Diviner's role in society differed from other spiritual leaders, such as the Healer or Shaman. The Diviner was esteemed as an intermediary between the physical and spiritual worlds. As a seeker of hidden truth, Diviners were tasked with interpreting signs from Gods and their emissaries. Diviners were also responsible for discovering and recording new forms of magic and spells. A Diviner's role depended upon their Source affinity.
This created diverse ideological groups when it came to understanding Magic. As the Diviner elevates their practice, it begins to take new forms, such as the Prophet. This spell-caster is well-practiced in Spell-Craft and masters several Divinations. The Herald is a traveler that seeks to bring the teachings of Magic or their patron to others. The Reckoner has seen something in their visions that they must battle against.

Perspective & Social Role

As the most diverse group of Casters, the Diviners are broken down into varying groups depending upon their Divination specialty. For example, a Diviner who specialized in Pyromancy would learn fire-based Magic and use fire in their rituals, whereas a Diviner who used water would be referred to as a Hydromancer.

These groups were often at odds with each other when it came to magical tradition. Each thought their variation of Spell-Craft was the greater. Despite these ideological extremes, many Cultures were dedicated to preserving their magical spells.

Historical Significance

The Diviner stands as one of the most ancient and enigmatic roles in History, rooted in the universal need to understand and influence forces beyond mortal perception. From the earliest hunter-gatherer societies to complex civilizations, the Diviner’s role has shaped the cultural and spiritual landscapes of countless peoples. Their presence marks a society’s evolving relationship with the unseen- whether through communion with spirits, interpretation of omens, or mediation between the divine and the mortal.
Long before written records, Diviners were the first historians; not of events, but of fate itself. In doing so, they preserved a society’s myths, taboos, and cosmic laws, ensuring that mortals walked in harmony with their gods and ancestors. Where once they spoke for spirits, later they would be integrated into priesthoods, mystery cults, and even scientific traditions. Astrology, alchemy, and early medicine all bear traces of the Diviner’s original work, interpreting the unknown and revealing the patterns that govern existence.

Author's Notes

This is the 6th Article written for the March of 31 Tales hosted by Demongrey! Between Slinger and Diviner, I got behind on an Article a day! BUT! After checking with Demongrey and assuring I've been keeping up with my word count goals, I'm still good to go!

Diviner is an interesting class. It isn't a "Divine" class but it also isn't an "Arcane" class. I don't know that such a distinction in Magic actually exists in Arc Sagas- yet. This is most exemplified by the Diviner, which blends both styles. That will be a question to answer in later Articles, but in the meantime, the Diviner has been a staple in my notes for the early classes! I'm happy that this Challenge is giving me the opportunity to expand on these ideas!

And remember, it isn't set in stone UNTIL it has been printed on a paper! So, let's keep on keeping on! Best wishes! Hope you're having an awesome day!
