Under the Hood

A Work in Progress

This month, I'm focused on making important CSS changes aimed at fixing some common bugs. If you review my Ice Age Articles, you may see this in older Articles. This month has been a revision a day on Ice Age Articles.

The idea is ensuring Theme CSS is standardized across the board. This is giving me the opportunity to review the flow of these Articles, in preparation for a Template overhaul, planned in March. I'm already getting ideas for how future Articles will look. In the meantime, the following was my To-Do List, coming back to World Anvil; now, it's a list of completed tasks!

While some of the Article revisions have been left incomplete, I will be returning to them as the project expands.
  • Arc Sagas Master DevLog and DevLog 2025 established. Timelines track my progress.

  • Home Page CSS and Modern Age Theme CSS Enhancements. New Page background (for Modern and Ice Age), enhanced for readability. Home Page was revised for language and clarity.

  • Addressed issues with Spoilers, Headers, Text-Bouncing, and enhanced color palette.

  • Updated Author Blurb, Profile, and In-Article Bios. New Author Profile Picture.

  • Revisions on Ice Age CSS/ Articles, throughout the month.

Editor's Response

Thank you, Worldwildbuilder, for your thought-provoking Inquiry!

First, I say often enough, "Protect your time for Writing"! Every successful Writer emphasizes this, and for good reason. It’s not about forcing yourself to write when you don’t want to- it’s about preserving Time for something that fulfills you.

Yes, writing through resistance can build discipline, but rest is just as vital. Life happens! Finding moments to decompress often leads to the best ideas. It’s like an artist stepping back from a painting- perspective sharpens creativity. Space allows inspiration to flow into storytelling and presentation.

I live by the phrase, "My Time is worth more than my Money." A solid work-life balance is essential. I’m fortunate to have a job that allows creative space, but if I didn’t, I’d ensure writing remained a priority. Setting aside an appropriate amount of Time for yourself is critical. I'm beginning to set weekly and monthly goals.

Now, I think if your goal is writing to write, then do that. You'll want to find methods for keeping yourself engaged with your own work on those days when writing is harder. My goals differ than the normal Writer; I'm also the Art Department, Designer, Developer, Marketing, Tester- I wear more than one hat. That's why when I get bogged down with one part of the project, such as writing , I move to another part for a little break or inspiration!

Arc Sagas is holistic World-building- every addition ripples into the lore and mechanics. As a large project, it takes Time, but I accepted that when I embraced writing and World-building as my purpose. It wasn't going to happen in a day, which is why active task management and fluid, adaptable goals keep me aligned, even when I’m not actively building.

Finally, when you're not writing, don’t beat yourself up! Instead, open up! Take an opportunity to allow inspiration to find you! This is the perfect Time to revisit your passions or explore something new. It's called a "balance" because you do other things, not as a Writer- but to be yourself! You’re not a Writer because you’ve written- you’re a Writer because you choose to be, every time you pick up the pen. Making that choice defines you. Love and trust the evolving process.

Tips & Tricks

Demongrey's Tips

In regards to completing his Challenge, Demongrey offers:

  • Have a Plan. It helps to know what you’re going to write today, tomorrow, and the day after. Plan details ahead; then when you sit down to write you have something to start with.

  • Keep it simple. You’re here to write today; not format, edit, proofread, or design. All of that can be done after you hit word count. Write First.

  • Don’t stress. It’s not set in stone; it’s all changeable later. In many ways the point of daily writing isn’t even the output; it’s the Practice. You write every day to get better at writing. It’s great- a sign that practice pays off.

Myth X' Tricks

In regards to completing the challenge, I'd like to offer:

  • Protect your Time! Make sure you're setting aside Time each day for Writing. Setting goals and having strong boundaries helps! Give yourself Time & Space to create your own Success!

  • Preparation meets Opportunity! Been considering ideas? Now's your chance to Draft them! Focus on task; new ideas can go on to become new Articles!

  • Accept low-risk, high-reward World-Building! Find some fine details in your setting to draw inspiration! Then, expand your own ideas! Read others' work for inspiration too! As always, I ask, "Why not?", Arc Sagas?

An Article Branch is a grouping of Articles that work together to tell a Story. You can expand on your own ideas by considering these in relationship to each other. Article branches to consider when writing new Articles:

  • Law
    • Spell
    • Condition
    • Tradition

  • Myth
    • Character
    • Item (Relic)
    • Document (Prose)
  • Material
    • Item
    • Vehicle
    • Technology

  • Settlement
    • Location

Question! Question!

"Everyone has a hidden tale. Even tools have a story for those who interpret their secret language. People, too, conceal their secrets."
— Elsie Mylee, Expert Dungeoneer

Here's an invitation to join the conversation! I have an Inquiry for you! Click below!

Question! Question!

What's 1 repeating Theme in your work & stories?

  • What is that one motif or Theme that continues to emerge in your writing? What new methods do you use to express your Theme?
    Have you noticed a pattern?
  • Common Themes appearing in your work isn't unusual! A continual theme in Arc Sagas is, "Nothing is ever as it seems!" Always more! What about you?

How do you connect or relate to your writing?

  • What inspires you? Are you one who writes for others, writes to express, writes with purpose, or writes to inform? Have you crafted/ defined your style? What makes you love it? Do you? Love it, that is?
  • Synthesizing each, I'm an ambiverted artist; I do it for myself and others. I enjoy the social aspect, to communicate and convey, and the story-telling!
    I also like imaginative fiction!

Prompt for a new Character! Expands through Document, Myth, Prose or more Characters!

Prompt 3

Author's Notes

It's the first Arc Tribune of a New Year! As I continue expanding the Arc Sagas universe, I know that this project will evolve and transform across Time. This year, I want to focus on what Arc Sagas can become, and in so doing, I've been looking at the term, "Deluxe Fantasy".

I had been struggling to find a description that captures the project, but as most things, this term came along and inspired me. I want to shoot for premium content, a focus on quality, and versatile story-telling to bring you exclusive material that you can use on its' own or with your own systems. Defining Deluxe Fantasy will be my goal for this year. I hope you'll follow along on my journey- this is holistic world-building, brought to you by World Anvil- connecting Writers and World-builders with the World!

I'm looking forward to the World Anvil World-Building Con this year! Did you hear that they got THE Ed Greenwood? You best believe I'm not going to miss that for the World! I'll definitely be covering the convention in my next Newsletter, so look out for that! See ya there! And let's make this new year...

SUPER!!

Thank you very much for the feature and your answer was illuminating! To answer your question, i would say that one of the recurring theme for Hysal, is probably Self-discovery, which makes sense since the story revolves around teenagers and young adults. Change in the character's life leads to their growth as a person, and is often painful.

Feb 18, 2025 07:37 by Myth Cross

I concur! I think your choice for youthful characters in exploring those themes is an excellent choice! It's relatable- at any age! And you're not wrong! Thanks again for such an engaging Inquiry! I always have fun answering these; it gives me an opportunity to think about how I approach my own work and share that experience with others. As always, best of good luck out there, Worldwild!

This is so cool and helpful on the same time <3 To answer the first question, I believe a theme that keeps appearing in my writing is that of balance. I tend to question the usual conflict of good vs evil, light vs darkness and explore the space in between. This is a core theme for my fantasy world, by I've noticed I lean towards it in many of my writings. As for how I relate to my writing, this one is hard. I think my approach to writing was influenced heavily since I joined WA. I write because I cannot imagine my life without it. I love it deeply. I express thoughts I don't even know I have before starting writing. But I discovered writing is so much fun when you also do it for others. I love the communication as well as the connection with other creators :) That's all I think, I said a lot XD Also, what is the storytellers circle? I am indeed curious!

Thank you so much for participating! It's a lot of fun for me to read through responses! When you think about your current setting, do you feel like you're going for something in-between, perhaps- something like a light-dark setting? It sounds like you could do a great job middling the line there! I think it'll always be a great point of exploration in story-telling too! We love to see these forces conflict!   Once more, thanks for sharing your thoughts! Indeed! I love writing, and a part of that joy is in sharing that with others! I know how important it is to write for yourself, absolutely, but when you find people to share it with, it's highly enriching!   I'll find you on Discord and give you some information about Story-Teller's Circle! We appreciate your interest!

Hello! I feel a little late to comment as it is March, but I wanted to answer your questions, because I thought they were really interesting!   I've actually only recently (like the past two years) consciously made an effort to put themes into my stories. One of the patterns I'm seeing is "togetherness" a group of friends coming together and no matter what they did/what they do/what they will do can separate them. Togetherness kind of gives a good cover to a lot of smaller themes that I incorporated through a lot of my recent works, like forgiveness and overcoming anger and bitterness.   I mainly write for myself. I'm still rather embarrassed of a lot of my work, since I feel like sometimes it can be a little cheesy or cliche. But over the past few months I've been trying to share my work a lot more, still mainly with friends. And while I still have a lot to learn about writing, it's actually quite nice to share your work and have people enjoy it!   Anyways, those are my thoughts, and hopefully I'll be a little more on time with a comment lol   Best wishes to you in world building!

Mar 9, 2025 17:13 by Myth Cross

I don't think you're late at all! And I am happy for your response! You know, you can get me with a good story wherein characters develop those relationships and begin to express camaraderie. I think it's wonderful and reminds me of the importance of our social bonds and who we connect with. That's an excellent view of the theme and it sounds like you have varied your explorations of it!   Trust me- the truth is we're all our best critics. I say best, because we know what we want- and there's less of a negative overtone lol but, you listen to that voice, and it guides you towards the project you envision. There isn't anything wrong with that; those feelings about your work can inform later work. I find writing is an innovative process and things change rapidly as you learn more about what you can do and stretch that understanding.   Last year, during World-Con, Tracy Hickman gave a stirring speech about the joys of creation and sharing- that when you love what you do, others will come to love it too, and want to share that joy with you. It's scary to promote your work- it's even scarier when you're not sure what people think. But, at the end of the day, that isn't for me to contemplate more than necessary. I have but to write and let the world sort it out for itself.   My best wishes for you also! I hope your work remains fulfilling and don't ever stop! : D
