Auntie Toadstew's Recipes and Assorted Magical Concoctions for Health, Luck, and Hexing

Of all the myths and rumors of magical items that have come out of the Augurweald, there is one that features prominently in a large number of folk tales and adventurer's accounts. It is an item both desired and feared, highly sought after by those aware of its potential. In truth, there are a fair number of reliably accounted instances of it being found, though every account ends with it somehow being lost or simply vanishing. It is, in fact, a cookbook.

A collection of varying recipes ranging from simple soups and bakes to more complex potion work and dishes, Auntie Toadstew's Recipes and Assorted Magical Concoctions for Health, Luck, and Hexing has a long and troublesome history to its (exceptionally long and cumbersome) name. Though each creation in its pages lists its attendant benefits, more often than not they seem to manifest in unexpected or even malignant ways. Someone seeking to restore a lost limb, for example, will probably regrow it; only it will turn out to be an animal's appendage, or will grow on backwards. Recipes of attraction often end up drawing the entirely wrong person, and ones for wealth bestow it in ironic or troubling ways. Nevertheless, it does not stop the foolish and daring from seeking it out, and it seems to consistently turn up for those desperate enough to prepare or consume its products.

Bound in what appears to be some kind of animal hide, with pages coated in a thick film of grease, stains, and a variety of concerning burns, there is only one clue to its author. An inscription on the first page remains unfaded with time, reading "Auntie Toadstew, Kitchenwitch and Amateur Sculptor." Of this Auntie Toadstew and the status of her current skill level as a sculptor, there remains no recorded evidence, even within folklore.

Purpose

The intent behind the book's creation is murky, as it is with many magic objects. Perhaps it truly was simply a means for a witch or hag to record their own concoctions and dishes, though its naturally deceptive and sometimes malignant nature seems to dispute this theory. Setting it loose in the world seems to accomplish nothing other than sow chaos; if intentionally released by its owner, either this must be their only goal, or their true intentions remain heavily obscured. The book itself does at times seem to have its own agenda, as it seems to typically be encountered by those desperate enough to use it.
