Nullwood
Nullwood is a rare, silvery-veined hardwood formed deep within the forests of Adril , its unusual properties born from a strange alchemical interaction between colossal trees and the Glinthurak . This waste, slowly absorbed into the grain of the living tree, transforms the surrounding wood into something far more than mundane timber, it becomes magically resistant, unnaturally dense, and almost impervious to enchantment.
The result is Nullwood: a material so poor in magical conductivity that it actively disrupts arcane flows. Its surface seems to hum with a quiet stillness, like air after a spell fizzles. To the magically attuned, it feels hollow, or even offensive, as if the Weave itself has been scoured away from it.
Though extremely rare and difficult to harvest without angering native draconic or fey guardians, the Cythrian Empire and institutions like the Arcane Lyceum have sought it for specialized applications. Magehunters and elite Black Knights] often carry weapons or shields inlaid with Nullwood, designed to absorb or ground spell surges during combat. These weapons cannot channel spells themselves, but their resistance to arcane energy offers vital protection against errant enchantments or hostile spellfire.
Small slivers of Nullwood are also shaped into amulets, brooches, or rings, worn by scouts, inquisitors, or nobles who fear magical espionage. While not true wards, these charms dull incoming magical effects and may delay scrying, enchantment, or curses long enough for countermeasures to be taken.
Most rare, and highly regulated, are chambers lined entirely in Nullwood, used for high-security interrogations, forbidden rituals, or treaty discussions. Within such a “dead zone,” magic fails unpredictably, teleportation sputters, and even divine communion feels distant. Only a handful of such rooms exist in the known world, and those who enter often describe the eerie quiet as more oppressive than silence itself.
Nullwood is never sold openly. It is harvested in secret, hoarded by powerful organizations, and always marked with imperial or arcane seals, lest it fall into the wrong hands and silence magic where it is most needed.
