Arcanist
An Arcanist of the Arcane Lyceum is a master of magical theory, spellcraft, and the fundamental forces that govern arcane energy. While many within the Lyceum study magic, the title of Arcanist is reserved for those who have not only demonstrated personal prowess in spellcasting but also contributed meaningfully to the broader understanding of magical phenomena. Their research may involve the development of new schools of thought, the refinement of existing spells, or the exploration of ancient, forgotten magical practices. It is not uncommon for an Arcanist to be called upon to consult with military commanders, city officials, or even foreign scholars when magical expertise is required.
Arcanists often specialize within the broader field of magic, aligning with one or more schools, abjuration, illusion, evocation, necromancy, and so on. However, many of the most respected Arcanists deliberately blur these lines, preferring to pursue the deep interconnections between the schools. Their work is as much theoretical as it is practical: runic languages, ley line interference, planar harmonics, and magical ethics are all considered fertile ground for research.
Teaching is a vital part of the Arcanist’s role. They lead lectures, supervise apprentices and savants, and mentor promising students in private study. Their presence at the Lyceum is both an intellectual and moral anchor, especially since the death of Archmage Craezar. Many Arcanists see it as their duty to uphold his legacy by ensuring the responsible and egalitarian use of magical power.
Arcanists hold seats on academic committees and help decide matters of curriculum, magical regulation, and even defense strategy in times of crisis. They are granted unfettered access to the Lyceum’s magical resources, including restricted sections of the library and high-tier ingredients or focuses for their work. Their quarters are located in the Inner Spire or nearby, well-supplied and often enchanted with personalized wards and tools.
To be named an Arcanist is to be trusted with power and the wisdom to use it well. It is a title that speaks not only of magical skill but of insight, discipline, and vision.
