Daymares/Nightmares

Daymares and Nightmares are wild horse creatures living two lives and taking two forms, one during the night and the other during the day. They are infused with a wild sort of magic that makes them not only aggressive but also very elusive. They are symbolic of magic and the cycle of the sun to many people.

Basic Information

Anatomy

The Mares look very similar in basic structure and shape as typical horses, although larger on average (nearly six feet from hooves to shoulder). The Daymare and Nightmare forms are uniquely different from each other, but no matter what form they are in they have short soft fur.

Biological Traits

A Daymare's hooves are imbued with the magic of the sky, so they are particularly fast in this form. Nightmares' hooves can burn attackers and are particularly defensive. Their whinnies are also gruffer and almost resonant in this form.   Maximum speed: 40 mph

Ecology and Habitats

The Mares live in open fields and plains or sparse forests, but there needs to be lots of open space to run. They are fairly territorial, but it is more of an issue when faced with Nightmares.

Dietary Needs and Habits

They usually just eat grasses in the hills, but will also easily eat berries on shrubs.

Biological Cycle

Mares change on a day to night cycle. In the winter, when nights are longer, their Nightmare form lasts longer as well. Sunrise and sunset mark the points in time for change.

Additional Information

Social Structure

They usually move in large herds to specific territory for grazing. Sometimes they can herd together in groups of as small as 3 or 4, however.

Domestication

They are very rarely able to be tamed and bred due to their wild nature, but certain trainers in Larelo have been able to accomplish this.

Geographic Origin and Distribution

The Hastfolk Hills of Daltalan hold a variety of herds of Mares.

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Nightmares are able to see in the dark. Daymares' cloud mane and tail are very sensitive, like a cat's whiskers, and small movements can convey a lot of information.
Lifespan
20 years
Conservation Status
The idea of putting these creatures under protection was floated around when poachers tried exploiting the magical properties of the Mares' manes and hooves. The magical properties fade, however, when the creature is killed or separated from pieces of it, so many poachers gave up on hunting them, and were viewed as more trouble than they were worth.
Average Height
5' 8"
Body Tint, Colouring and Marking
A Daymare's fur is sky blue, and its mane, tail, and hooves are white. The mane and tail are reminiscent of fluffy clouds and seem to move gently in the wind. The hooves are solid white and slightly cold. A Nightmare's fur is black, and its mane, tail, and hooves are fiery orange. The mane and tail are active flames that flicker, and the hooves glow like embers, although they do not set fire to the grasses.
