Anallusite
Anallusite is a dangerous but highly valuable mineral ore found in the depths of the underground. It is considered to be an illegal substance as declared by the Order of Alabaster Knights and has both dangerous and addictive properties. It can be found in solid, liquid (dilute), and powdered forms.
Despite being mineral in nature, anallusite seems to exhibit near-plant-like behaviors, such as growing out of the ground in tendril-like structures resembling tree branches or bushes. It most commonly appears luminescent blue in color, though there have been reported sightings of white, gold, and even dark red anallusite. It is unknown what effect, if any, the color has on its properties, as only blue anallusite has ever been properly extracted.
The mineral is stable when intact, however has the tendency to become unstable when interacted with. It is known to explode randomly and violently, causing cave-ins. Exposure to unrefined anallusite is hazardous to humanoids, with long-term exposure having the potential to result in what is called the Analluse Disease - a dangerous and potentially deadly wasting disease.
Properties
Physical & Chemical Properties
Anallusite's effects on most humanoid species have been linked to its magical properties. Some theories suggest that the ore is not, in fact, mineral in nature, but rather a condensation of magical energy to such high density that it becomes a solidified mass. Followers of this theory also believe that anallusite is somehow linked to dragons, who are similarly formed by condensed magic. The exact nature of this connection, if one exists, is yet unknown.
Studies show that anallusite has a powerful effect on a mage's abilities, especially in the case of maledictus mages (those capable of producing their own magical energy, such as wizards, sorcerers, and druids). Short-term exposure, especially when ingested in very dilute amounts, gives the mage a burst of energy and amplifies the power of their spells, granting them a short burst of clarity of mind. However, prolonged or frequent use destabilizes the magic pathways, causing the mage's casting to become wildly unstable (an effect similar to being in a Magic Burst Zone).
The ore has strong chemical properties similar to substances native to other planes of existence, which produce extreme euphoria when introduced into a humanoid body. While there is evidence to suggest that in small quantities (and if used correctly) the ore may have healing properties, it is also highly addictive and, if not used carefully, deadly.
History & Usage
Hazards
Prolonged exposure to the ore, whether during mining or processing, has moderate to severe negative effects on the body. Short-term exposure has been linked to headaches, cough, difficulty breathing, nausea, malaise, nosebleeds, fatigue, and nightmares. Long-term exposure can cause chronic symptoms and the development of the Analluse Disease, named after the ore that causes it. The severe symptoms range from chronic migraines to internal bleeding to loss of mental capacity. As a result, the ore has been banned from use in decorations or jewelry.
Dwarves appear to be the only humanoid species that is largely resistant to the effects of anallusite, thus being the only race capable of safely mining and working with the ore. This appears to be at least partially related to their natural resistance to magic, though it is unknown exactly how this relationship works, or whether one is due to the other or vice-versa. Magical and medical professionals also warn that while dwarves may be resistant to short-term and, to some extent, long-term, exposure to anallusite, they are not completely immune to it. Long-term exposure will still cause dwarves to suffer from Analluse Disease and decrease their life expectancy drastically.
Fey-touched races (e.g. elves, gnomes, etc) are especially susceptible to the negative effects of analluse exposure. Their exposure symptoms are generally more severe and last longer, and Analluse Disease causes a drastic decrease to their naturally long lifespans. Fey-born individuals (a.k.a those born within the Feywilds) are incapable of removing the analluse contaminant from their bodies naturally and thus even short-term exposure to solid or powdered forms of analluse causes them to suffer sudden and violent symptoms akin to a severe allergic reaction. This commonly leads to death if not treated immediately.
Distribution
Trade & Market
The ore can be used in solid rock form without the need of refinement that many gems require, however using anallusite in jewelry or other decorations is strictly forbidden as it is highly dangerous to both the wearer and those around them. Anallusite powder can be found on the black market, however prices are extremely high due to low availability.
Law & Regulation
Liquid solutions of dilute anallusite are permitted to be used by select mages at an amount of no more than one a week with a higher limit of no more than six a year. Permits for its use are issued by the Order only when it is deemed to be extremely necessary, such as when mages have to carry out wartime tasks or are assisting with capture of a warlock. As addiction is a common issue, such permits are typically not issued to the same mage more than once, and all liquid anallusite must be obtained from a designated Order member. Violation of any of these rules are grounds for termination of all anallusite-holding permits and return of the mage of the Tower he or she graduated from.
