Sting
The ancient enemy is actually a creation of his ancestors. They believe that they should have inherited some of the technology that the "creators" had developed before they decided to take a different direction in their technology. Instead of following a purely machine direction, they started merging biology and technology. This was a sting to their "emotions."
The machines felt betrayed; some also gained a limited, but corrupted sentience, and went on a rampage.
