Section 4
This department within the Atlantean security forces deals with treason, subversion, and similar problems within the company hierarchy. They have extreme power and little oversight; no one is beyond their reach. It has been rumored that they have even staged coups.
They don't deal with indigenous workers unless they are working with the Atlanteans in the business framework or are causing them to "go native." In some locales, this "corruption" causes problems for corporations. Production is going down as well as discipline, and causing empathy with test subjects is affecting progress.
Section 4 officers are very strict in the performance of their duties. Often, those who are detained are threatened into compliance or are reeducated in some way. Many are terrified of being questioned by these people. Some disappear and never return, or come back completely changed.
Officially, they don't exist. Unofficially, everyone fears them. Children are told, "Be good, or the DIS will take you." Whispers of black vans, mysterious disappearances, midnight raids.
Structure
The Director is a shadowy, faceless figure. His identity is unknown to the public. He's possibly an AI, clone, or ancient mind in a preserved body.
There are different bureaus within Section 4.
- Bureau of Disloyalty Detection (BDD): manages informants, AI surveillance, lie detection, and predictive behavior modeling.
- Bureau of Silent Correction (BSC): handles interrogations, re-education, brainwashing, or final removals.
- Bureau of Deep Shadows (BDS): special black ops branch, field agents called "Silhouettes," trained in assassination and infiltration.
- Bureau of Social Optics (BSO): manages media control, public perception, and counter-narratives.
- Bureau of Internal Purity (BIP): oversees psychological loyalty in the Directorate itself; paranoia runs rampant here.
Public Agenda
They exist to preserve the sovereignty and integrity of the ruling government by identifying, monitoring, suppressing, and eradicating all internal threats to social order, national ideology, and state leadership. This includes the prosecution of sedition, treason, ideological impurity, insurgency, espionage, and subversion.
Assets
Operatives are recruited young, often from orphanages or elite academies. Loyalty is ensured through psychological imprinting, oaths sealed by biotech, or brainwashing.. Some senior agents are bio-engineered, cybernetically enhanced, or trained from birth.
Loyalty is Peace, Order is Strength. Dissent is Death.
