Kelah First Dragon Wing
This is the Weyr's primary dragon wing military formation. A full operational wing consists of 15 to 30 dragons, organized into three or four Flights. The effectiveness of the wing relies on the riders and dragons' telepathic synchronization, their ability to go between, and the dragon's ability to fly.
Structure and Command
Core Formations
They utilized specific formations based on the mission objective:
1. The Thread Sweep (Combat Formation): This is the most common formation, designed to maximize the coverage of their fire breath against falling Thread.
| Rank | Color | Role |
| Wingleader | bronze | Commander of the wing directs movement and targeting. |
| Wing second | bronze | Second in command; coordinates the strike force. |
| Flight Leaders | brown/blue | Lead smaller groups (flights) of 5-10 dragons; focus on specific zones. |
| General Riders | blue/green | The majority of the force; responsible for the continuous, overlapping fire patterns. |
- Shape: a deep, layered V-shape or a wide, horizontal Line Abreast.
- Function: fly with overlapping wings and synchronized movements. To fly rapidly across a target zone to obliterate falling Thread.
- Tactical Element: Greens fly the fastest. Browns and Bronzes fly the core, using their larger size to maximize their fire screen.
- Shape: circular or elliptical perimeter surrounds the target area.
- Function: repeatedly fly the perimeter, igniting and destroying the Thread that falls inward. The goal is to contain the damage to the smallest possible zone, protecting what's below.
- Tactical Elements: The Wing Second maintains command from a high altitude, and he directs Dragons to hot spots. The Riders must coordinate precise timing to avoid collisions.
- Shape: dragons are positioned at specific intervals over the territory.
- Function: while flying, the Dragons execute precise, instant go between jumps. A message or small cargo is instantly transferred from Dragon to Dragon across vast distances.
- Tactical Element: relies on the perfect, telepathic synchronization of the Wingleader and the go-between-master (often a Bronze or another experienced Rider). Any lapse can lead to a Dragon misplacing themselves.
- Instantaneous Relocation (Go Between): the dragon wing's single greatest military asset. A wing can disappear from one continent and reappear over another in a blink, bypassing all logistical barriers and surprising any ground-based enemy (like hostile Holders or rebels).
- Fire Barrage: their fire is an AOE weapon against the primary enemy (Thread). Use coordinated fire to save Holds.
- Overhead Reconnaissance: High-flying Dragons (often Blues) provide scouting and early warning capabilities over hostile terrain or open sea.
Composition
Manpower
This formation requires 15-30 dragonriders.
Equipment
Flying gear (tough leather clothes), flying harness, flying boots, helmet, gloves, and goggles.
Weaponry
The Dragon's fire-breathing weapon is their only weapon.
Logistics
Logistical Support
Before they launch into the air to fight Thread, a ground crew feeds them broken-up phosphere ore, which allows them to breathe fire.
Herders raise herdbeasts to feed them after their exertions in battle.
Auxilia
The Weyr has backup Riders who will replace injured or killed Riders.
Upkeep
A Weyr has Holders and craftsmen who tithe their work and supplies to support the Weyr. Their payment is the protection that the Riders provide.
Recruitment
Dragonriders find recruits on Search when they travel to various holds, cots, and crofts. Their Dragon can tell if the children can Impress a dragon egg.
