Geosmin: Fresh Rain Smell

Written by Pookas Kreations

This is the substance that gives you the smell you get when water falls on dirt, the fresh rain smell. The substance is actually a family of organic compounds, primarily geosmin, that are responsible for that unmistakable, earthy, and increadibly appealing scent that rises from the ground after a summer rain. Sometimes the smell is described as "petrichor" (the smell of rain on dry earth), its not just the wet earth itself. Which comes from the words "petra" (rock or stone), and "ichor" (the ethereal fluid said to be the blood of the gods in mythology).   The unique aspect of geosmin's smell is its extreme potency--humans can detect it in very low concentrations, far more sensitive to it than to many other odors. It's produced by certain types of soil bacteria as a byproduct of their metabolic activity. When rain hits dry soil, it dislodges these compounds, carrying them into the air where our noses can detect them.   It has a truly unique, deep, grounding quality that evokes feelings of freshness, cleanliness, and renewal. It is a nostalgic scent, tied to childhood memories or simply the universal experience of a refreshing rain. It's an aroma that signifies life and growth, a subtle communication from the microbial world beneath our feet.

History & Usage

Discovery

While the smell of fresh rain has certainly been noticed and appreciated by humans for as long as we've existed, the first person to scientifically describe it and coin the specific term "geosmin" in a journal was Isabel Bear.    She published her findings in a paper titled "Nature of Argillaceous Ordour" in the journal Nature. In this paper, Bear coined the term "geosmin" to describe this distinct earthy scent, combining the word "geo" meaning earth, and "smin" meaning smell. Literally meaning "earth smell."
