The Demon Emperor
The Devourer of Light, He Who Unmakes
"He promised no paradise, no justice—only dominion. And even that, he took by fire."
—Attributed to the last Archsage of Bulzimer
In the final days of the Age of Gods, when divine blood still ran in mortal veins and the gates between realms stood open, there arose a being who would bring the world to the edge of ruin. Known only as The Demon Emperor, his true name is long lost—or perhaps forbidden to speak.
He came from beyond the mortal veil, a figure wreathed in shadow and lies. Some say he was once a mortal who delved too deeply into forbidden magic and ascended through madness. Others believe he is a fallen god, cast from the heavens for crimes too great to name. But all tales agree: his power was real, and his hunger endless.
The Demon Emperor carved a swath across Imos, conquering and corrupting with a terrible ease. His Dark Host—a legion of nightmares, fallen heroes, and beasts born of blasphemy—answered only to him. They left cities in ruin, rivers choked with ash, and kingdoms brought low with whispered promises and broken wills.
It is said he could level fortresses with a word, unmake heroes with a gesture, and twist the hearts of saints into generals of his war machine. No army could stand against him alone. Only when the great powers of the land formed the Covenant of Dawn did the tide of battle begin to turn.
His true ambitions remain a mystery. Some say he sought to claim all of Aphirion, to remake the world in his image. Others claim his aim was deeper—to reach the roots of the world itself and corrupt the source of all life and magic.
The Fate of the Emperor
The truth of his end is one of Aphirion’s greatest and most dangerous mysteries. All that is known for certain is that his presence vanished after the cataclysm known as the Shattering of Imos, when the continent split and the world screamed.
Countless legends offer conflicting fates:
- The Wounded King – Some say the King of the Shining Men wounded the Emperor so grievously in the final battle that he crawled into the deeps of the world to recover, hidden and festering in silence. One day, he shall rise again.
- The Buried Lord – Another tale tells that he was sealed beneath the earth by divine rite, bound by chains forged from the light of a dying star, buried beneath Imos’ broken heart where no living thing dares tread.
- The Burning Fall – Others claim he perished in the Shattering, his body torn apart by elemental fury as the Spirits of Nature unleashed their wrath.
- The Whispering Flame – Yet a darker story suggests he was not destroyed at all, but merely cast into the minds of mortals—a voice in dreams, a curse in bloodlines, a lie that waits to be believed.
Historical Basis
In the modern age, the truth has been unearthed by a band of heroes known as the Balefire Venture. Through their investigations, they confirmed that the Demon Emperor was not a mortal warlord, nor a god—but in fact, the Demon Prince Fraz-Urb'Luu, one of the great and terrible lords of the Abyss. He was being worshipped by the Cult of Az'Ur, a following created by a group known as the Elemental Convocation. The Elemental Convocation sought to bring in worshippers of the false god Az'Ur to bolster Fraz-Urb'Luu's power so that they may siphon it off for themselves and attain power to steer society in the correct course.
Fraz’s campaign was not merely a war of conquest—it was an invasion from the Abyss itself, a calculated effort to establish a permanent foothold in the mortal world through Imos. His power allowed him to warp minds, rewrite memory, and seduce the pure of heart with illusion and false promises. Even those who fought him often found themselves dreaming of his voice in the dark.
After the Shattering, Fraz-Urb’Luu was sealed beneath the country of Vandor, somewhere in the deepest reaches of the Underdark. His essence was bound within a massive black stone, and his terrible staff—a focus of his dominion over illusion and manipulation—was shattered into three pieces.
One of those fragments, one is held by the wizard Fen. The other two are held by the dangerous Cassian Evenhell.
